Dutch Oven Biscuit Casserole....MY FIRST

Dutch Oven meal. I decided to go old school and break out a favorite from Boy Scouts. Biscuit Casserole! This was as good as I remember. Very tasty and very filling.

The ingredients was 2lbs Hamburger (Go lean), 1 Onion, 1 Bell Pepper, Tomato Soup, Ketchup, Salt, Pepper, Cayenne, Garlic, Cheddar Cheese, and a Dutch Oven.

Getting the egg up to temp and setting up the Dutch Rig...

Brown the hamburger meat with the onions and bell pepper. I found that browning meat goes better when the Oven sits directly on the platesetter. I also closed the lid with a small piece of Hickory for some smoke flavor while browning.

Then layer the tomato soup and ketchup...

Then place the oven on the Egg Feet and cover. Bake at 375 until biscuits are cooked...

I love the Dutch Oven aspect of the egg. This was really wonderful and I can not wait to explore some more with other recipes and my dutch oven. :):):)

    reminds me of my college days when I had to cook for the roommates with little or no budget. Always a satisfying meal.

    Wow, what a great looking cook. I like my DO too, but tend to like in the cooler months but your cook may change my mind.

    I hear ya, I want to do some mussles in a green garlic sauce or some clams or cippino and it'd be worth the sweat! :woohoo: I'll save the heavy duty meals for fall - I'll still sweat but in a bipartisan way though ;)

    Chili, Cornbread, Pie

    When I got home last night there was nothing in the fridge but some suspect hot dogs and wilted carrots.... and after searching through the kitchen for a while, things weren't looking too promising for dinner.Opening the freezer, there it was ..... a quart of chili made a couple months back... and looking through the cupboards, there was fixins for cornbread. I like cornbread with chili and having remembered seeing a recipe for combining the two, I thought I'd wing it.


    1/2 chopped onion
    ~ 1 14 oz. can creamed corn
    about 1/2 cup of milk
    1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
    dollop of mayo (no eggs and couldn't think what else to use)
    about 1.5 cups of yellow cornmeal
    3 tsp baking powder



    1 Fill the bottom of a 12" cast iron skillet with about a quart of chili.
    2 Mix well. Try to keep the mixture from getting too thick or too thin..... it should just pour out of the bowl.
    3 Evenly pour over the chili and bake until brown on top.
    4 Have a moment of silence for the greens, crack a PBR and eat.

    i have made it proabably 10 -15 times

    i have done some modifications but not too mush

    i usually brown about 3/4 lb of hamburger and put in brown then add the onion sautee a little place some cheese on top of the chili mixture

    then i add the cornbread mix then if there is some chedder cheese i have smoked in the fridge then i will cube some of that up and push into the cornbread mixture the first pic there was when i figured to add some meat so there would not be so much liquid the second one i added the extra cheese.. serve with a dollop of sour cream ;) hope that gives you something to try come football season..


    it travels well also i took some to vaildallia1's house from here in a softsided cooler.. everyone who tried it :angry: liked it

    Hello Ginny(sp?), I can not wait to meet you and hopefully it will be soon. The dish I did tonight feeds 8 so I will be doing left overs tomorrow plus our daughter comes home late afternoon :woohoo:. So no cooking tomorrow night.

    Dutch oven is great and looks like you had a awesome cook. Good Eats. Here is another recipe if you like Chicken and Rice. We love this dish a lot.
