transition from hot fire to all-night low/slow

I want to grill sausages for dinner and then later in the evening start a long overnight butt cook.
Am I asking for trouble (in terms of fire stability over night) if I shut down the fire after dinner, and then later simply top off the lump and start again? Or should I clean out firebox (even though some coals likely to still be hot) and start over from an empty firebox?

The sausage cook shouldn't be all that long. Do your clean out before the sausage cook. Make sure you top off the lump before the overnight cook.
I would think you will be fine.

The one thing I had to watch out for doing this exact thing (alright they were steaks) was make sure the grate is clear of blockage once it is back down to temperature for the low and slo. The hot cook will leave ashes and small pieces of charcoal around and they may have blocked some of the holes (did on me) use your wiggle stick to clean them out and you'll be fine

That is a good point Doug, and a wise thing to do, especially as the next cook is going to be overnight. It would be sad to loose the meat because a fire went out.
If the lump is out, it might not be a bad idea to clean out the lump and reload with the same plus some new lump.
I would use a powered vent system and wouldn't think twice about not cleaning out.

Thanks for the feedback. Since this is going to be my first-ever all-night butt cook, and since I don't have a stoker/guru, I don't want to mess around. And it occurred to me that I still have my faithful, if somewhat decrepit, Weber that served me for a decade and will do the sausages just fine.

unfortunately the webeer will not cook the sausages as well as your egg.
This is the greatest signature EVAR! -
True enough, but hopefully everyone will be thrilled by the butt tomorrow.

That will happen, enjoy. I made the same decision after my steaks then Butt cook-> No more cooks just before the low and slow, it adds to the effort when you might be up all night. I will get a Guru but not until I have paid off 50K in kitchen renos and 7K in new water supply. So until then low and slow by hand and with as little complications as possible.
