OT...Okra...

In case you can't tell,....we love this stuff. It's the only vegetable that Marina Ranger can't get enough of. So, I'm growing my own in large tubs. I don't have enough light or space (at least that that Mama will let me use)to grow it in the ground. The only place where I do have enough sunlight and space is in the front yard beds. When we moved in a couple of years ago, The conversation went something like this....."Absolutely not, Jed! We are not growing crops in the front yard!"
I'm biding my time, as I just expanded those beds by about 200%. Stay tuned.

Try this method-Boil whole pods until tender,then dredge them in cornmeal and pan fry.
I could eat a bushel!!!

Hey Beli....here's a good Southern recipe.
Sautee sliced okra (1/2 slices or so) in a heavy cast iron skillet with some olive oil and butter. After about 5 minutes add some diced tomatoes and cook over medium-high heat until the tomatoes begin to break down and the okra is tender. Season with a little salt and black pepper. Serve over long grain white rice. -

I sure hope you know how big okra plants get. They aren't small.
We've got about an acre and a half planted at my outlaw's place and easily pick 2-3 bushels a day. Remember to pick 'em while they're little. Big okra is not good.
Also, pickled okra are to die for. I pickle mine with a couple slices of jalapeno and a pinch of red pepper flakes to add a little kick. -
Okra is absolutely wonderful, cooked on the EGG!
I just cut it in half, lenghtwise, marinate it in Italian Salid Dressing for about 30 minutes, use tongs to lift it out of the dressing and let it drain and place it on oiled grill pan. Let it cook, direct, on a raised grate, until it starts to brown nicely.
It is easy and wonderful!
In the attached picture, you see some oriental eggplant on the right side of the grill. This was cooked somewhere around 350.

Yeah, I've grown okra for 30 years, but never in a pot. I've got 2 pots going...one with Clemson Spineless, and the other is a red variety that I can't recall right now. I was waiting on someone to call my hand on not thinning them some more.
I may yet in the next day or so. These were seeded about a month ago, so no blooms yet. I'm doubling them as decorative containers and told Mama they were edible Hibiscus (just kidding).

For my lunch today I just finished some homegrown okra & tomato gumbo that Mint Tulip made on Saturday...delicious...
also I was at Fox Bros last month and their vegy of the day was baby okra fried whole. It was very tender and very good...I had never had it fried whole. I will do it soon with some of ours...this is the first time we grew okra and it will not be the last... :P -

Your comment about "not growing crops in the front" came up in our neighborhood last year. One of our neighbors has a huge front lawn and turned a small part of it up to make a vegetable garden. I thought it was pretty, was pretty efficient for getting good tomatoes and corn, a good pastime, etc, etc. But among some of the older neighbors who had made it through the depression, front-yard gardens smacked of "poor folks", as with outside clothes lines.
The new generation has none of these preconceptions, and it is interesting to run up against an old one like that.

Mike, I love that stuff! Used to grow it in our garden when we lived in South Carolina. Took a lot of plants to get enough for a meal.
