I have a cedar table. I use a cover when the BGE cools down

My research says cypress. However, you have to find someone that sells it. I was able to buy it (in Fort Worth) with one edge cut and both sides of 5 to 7 inch wide planks planed smooth. I had to do everything else. Cypress supposedly will last many many years exposed. I would send a picture but new to forum and have not figured that out.

    Good luck! :)
  • For outdoor use, cedar, cypress, white oak, teak or ipe (expensive), and redwood all naturally hold up to the elements. In addition to the wood, you also need to pay attention to the methods you use to fasten it together - stainless hardware and waterproof glue (Titebond III or polyurethane glue), as well as the finish you use (either an oil designed for outdoor furniture or marine spar varnish).

Remember that wood will expand and contract across the grain with changes in humidity, so be sure to design with that in mind.

If you're not familiar with such things, grab a book on building outdoor furniture or poke around on the web for that topic to learn what works.

    Hope this helps.

  • For Mississippi I would recommend Cedar or Cypress. They are both good out doors and readily available here in the south. Try to find a saw mill in your area they are much cheaper.

I did a cypress table with Spar finish. Looks great after a year and a half 24/7 uncovered in SW facing sun in Tampa (hot and humid!) I will probably have to refinish next year.
