i am new to the kamado cooking style and looking for an egg. there is a good deal on craig's list for a medium size grill with accessories in my area for $300. i have a family of 5 and already have a great gas grill. is this a good size to get started or should i wait for a bigger one to come my way? i have seen the ones in the atlanta area and could get down there if needed.
thanks for the advice.

there is a large in the Atlanta area right now in a cedar table for 350.00 it is a steal!!! I think a med cooking for 5 is going to be a teaser for you
I would get it and then watch for another med or a large to go with it. you can bet $$ you will want a second egg
and the gasser is going to be very under used I bet too! -
Welcome.
That is a good deal for a medium, especially with the right accessories. Once you start using the Egg though, your gas grill will become an afterthought - I also had a high-end gas grill that I used all the time. I haven't even refilled the tank in about 2 years, and just use it to store my Eggcessories now.
If you're going to be cooking for 5 or more people on a regular basis, you might want to consider a Large. Another thing to think about is the warranty. If you buy a new Egg, you get a lifetime warranty on the ceramic parts. If you pick up a used one, you get no warranty. If it were me, I'd grab that medium if it is in good shape, use that to learn and make sure you like this style of cooking, and later add a large or XL if you feel you need it. Many of us here have two or more Eggs (I personally have a large and a small).

The main thing to consider, I think, regarding large vs. medium is the question of real estate. You can cook a ton of butt on a medium and a fairly large turkey, but when time comes to do things that require grid real estate, then you might want the large. How big a pizza might you want to cook? A large will handle slabs of ribs without having to cut them short with ease. Do you do burgers or chicken parts on the grill?
That said, $300 for a medium in good shape is a deal, and if you want to get the Egg now vs. some unknown time in the future, you might want to go for it. If a good deal on a large popped up, you could probably sell the medium and get your money back. Good luck! The Naked Whiz -
i curreently cook for 5 and i started with a XL and just recently got a MED so that on those nights i just want to do a fast cook for burgers brats..chicken patties etc ...i use the MED...big cooks and more i use the XL...
i would get it to start and more than likely you will be adding to the family of eggs!! -
LOL, I agree with everyone! That being said, I am single and live alone, I have a medium and and love it. If I had to feed four more off it I might be challenged. If I was feeding five and wanted guest over I might be in trouble. I love my medium but would also love to pick up a large like the one in Atlanta. My 2¢.

My philosophy is "always get more than your minimum requirement". You'll need it someday. Go for the large if your pocket allows. You won't regret it.
