What's the highest temp you get on your Small Egg?

I've had the Small for 7 years and have never gotten it over 550-575° or so. Some on the forum told me they could get over 700°, and some had the same results as I had.
Last night it took 35 minutes, with Cowboy lump up to the fire ring, and got up to 640° and stayed there. I don't know what got into the old boy after all these years. Is there such a thing as BGE Viagra?
Let's hear what temps other Small owners can get.

700 isnt a problem for mine. When was the last time you checked the thermometer?
-
OMG, I never thought of that. The Large zooms up so fast with the same brand of thermometer that it never occurred to me!Judy in San Diego

if you haven;'t used it in a while, it will take longer to get to temp.
i noticed when i used my small a lot, that it would get to 700 no problem. the large would take longer. fast- forward, and if i used the large a lot and left the small on it's own, it would take longer.
i think it's a situation where there's damp everything. ash, lump, ceramics. and nothing absorbs heat like water.
whichever egg i use the most is the one that gets to temp fastered egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
I just tested the thermometer in boiling water and it was 210°. So that's not the problem.Judy in San Diego

Thanks. I seem to get the opposite result, though. I rarely use the Large, and when I used it on Memorial Day for the first time in a year, it zoomed up to 700° in about 10-15 minutes! I use the Small just for myself frequently. I tell myself it's hotter nearer the grate so I can ignore the thermometer.Judy in San Diego

I have no trouble getting to 725 and as I recall my highest was 810. You mentioned using Cowboy and that might be the explanation depending on what types of wood scraps went into your particular bag of lump.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

lots of fresh new lump will help.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

I recently found a bag of Maple Leaf lump I'd forgotten about. As I remember, that's really fast-burning too. I'll experiment with that next time I load the Egg.Judy in San Diego

I've buried the thermo on the small but alcohol was involved
currently have it sitting at 550 for the tri tip sear. -
You always give me a great big laugh! Don't ever get serious, you hear?Judy in San Diego

cowboy is THE go-to lump for high temps, in my book. usually maple and oak. long pieces with plaenty of airflow.
much maligned, but good stuff for a hot fast cooked egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
