All I can offer is the advice my dad gave me, when we moved a mattress into the apartment that I was sharing with my girlfriend (now wife): after we dropped it into the frame, he stood, patted it firmly and said "yep. every man needs a sturdy workbench"

We replaced our mattress earlier this year. We went to a speciality store and tried out several. I left the choice up to the better half. It ended up being a mattress that is made in Canada (Kingsdown)and we are happy with it.

We went with Select Comfort (Number Bed) years ago and haven't looked back. Sometimes I feel like a 35 and sometimes I feel like a 95. I can do that with the press of a button.

  • AZRP,

We did a Tempurpedic when we moved into our new place a few years ago, and it has been great. It's more expensive than a regular mattress, but is supposed to last twice as long (and has the warranty to match). It's really comfortable. Also, if you have allergies, it is supposed to be dust-mite proof.

I had a high end Sealy before that, and while I really liked it, it crapped out after about 10 years.

  • I have no experience with a Sealy, but have had a Select Comfort adjustable airbed for years now, and it is great.
  • Have a king size Sealy and plan on moving it to Corpus into guest bedroom. Meanwhile bought a new Sealy in Corpus - went to a "bed store" that carried several brands. I didn't realize Sealy (or other brands) had so many different beds ranging from super soft to "like a plank". We tried them all out and my bride made the selection - I can sleep on a pipe rack.

I had five kids, don't need a workbench anymore. ;) -RP
  • check out the sheet selection before purchasing!! I mean try them on the bed and roll around on it!
Purchased a Temperpedic with topper a few years ago--supposed to be 18" H; only one brand sheet doesn't "pop off" in the middle of the night--and they went out of business
Just bought son a middle of the line Temperpedic--no bell or whistles--and sheets not a problem!!! he loves it, too!

    Randy,

We got a Tempurpedic when we moved back into the house and I would reccommend it to anybody. Norma has a compressed disc and it relly helps her. Todd and I were talking about it once cause he has the same problem and he has the adjustable one and swears by it.

Avoid buying the most expensive, highest loft pillow top. That high pillow top padding breaks down very fast and you end up with deep gulleys. Best to buy a med grade matress with as little/no pillow top as possible. Next purchase a high grade 3inch memory foam topper. You will have a great matress and when the memory foam breaks down, just throw away and get another one. You would have instead new bed. Don't forget to purchase waterproof matress pad to keep out the mites and perspiration.

I'm a 75 most of the time. Sometimes I go up to 80, but that's my range. I LOVE my bed.

Same problem with a Sealey. The sheets drive us both nuts.

I can't believe how darn expensive those are.

I have a close acquaintance that got one 5 or 6 months ago. I keep trying to pin him down about liking it. He talks about the advantages but won't come out and say he is glad he has it.

My wife has real bad arthritis and sometimes she hurts so bad at night she can't stand it. I have wondered about a select comfort.

We got a memory foam topper and it does wear out. That what concerns me about tempurpedic beds.

Select Comfort is just unbelievably expensive for an air mattress.

    rosros,

Randy is getting to an age now that the waterproof cover makes sense for a lot of good reasons

We purchased a sleep number bed.
Not cheap but the greatest investment we could have ever made.

I've had a Tempurpedic for about 5 years. Just the base model. I absolutely love it and it loves me back.

I recommended one to my Dad and he hates it.

Personal chouce -- just be sure to lie on whatever you choose in the store for at least 10-15 minutes to make sure you are comfortable in it for longer than a couple minutes.

Another bed to look at if they have them in your area are Duxiana (Web Site). Yes they are expensive, but since you spend nearly 1/3 of your life in it, and the rest of your quality of life hinges upon how well you spend that 1/3, it is easy to justify spending the money on a good, long-lasting mattress that you will help you sleep better.

I think we are the only ones out there that has Select comfort and hates it :( we sleep spooned ;) and have the king sized. there is a foam divider between the two sides... it is mushed down to a gully. I like 75-80 and Neil likes 40-50 and I am always "falling" onto his side if I try to sleep on my side. Would love to get a temperpedic but hate to spend the $$ as this one is only 4 years old. if it was a queen or a double it would not be a problem. but even after 28 years we still sleep like newlyweds :kiss:
  • GG, thinking af a Select Comfort as an air mattress is analogous to thinking a Lexus is the same as a Yugo.
The ability to dial in your desired firmness really is a great feature. Most every night you will want that same setting, but there are nights where you have a pain in your back (or anywhere) and you can't get comfortable. On those nights you can adjust it firmer or softer and find a more comfortable position. Also, it doesn't sleep "like an air mattress." I don't know how to say it, but when you are on an air mattress and you move, you KNOW you are on an air mattress. When you move on these the bed reacts like a regular bed. But yes, they are a bit pricey.

Randy, we have owned a Tempurpedic for 4+ years and couldn’t be happier. Ended hip and backaches within a week. You may spend a little more up front but it is worth it IMHO. In case you ever need it, they have a great warranty. Good luck and wishing you a good night sleep whatever you buy.
