Kiln Shelf

So in the place of a standard pizza stone I've decided to go the kiln shelf route.

With that said, a few questions.

1) What size shelf would you recommend for an XL? As the grill size is 24", I can go with 21" or 15.5" from my local pottery store.

2) With a kiln shelf is it really necessary to also use a plate setter?

3) If a plate setter is used, feet down or up? If down then I'll pick up a few legs to create some spacing between the plate setter and the kiln shelf.

Thanks!

    1. 21", but is there that much of a price difference that it makes it worth while not to get the BGE Pizza stone.

    2. Can't answer that cause I don't own one; however, how do you plan on holding it up if you don't use the platesetter. I reckon you could place it on the grate.

    3. It is recommended when using the pizza stone that the platesetter goes feet down and you space the pizza stone above it. The BGE feet work well.

Kiln shelf works fine. You need enough space between the shelf and side of the egg for air.

I use several different length is stilts for the shelf.

I also have a pizza stone but see no reason I couldn't use the kiln shelf.

    $60 vs $90.

    I was thinking grate.

    Thanks
  • I don't know where you are getting your Kiln shelves but I only paid $54. including shipping for the 21" and $39. for the 16". You will still need a plate setter or some other means to deflect the direct heat or you will have burnt bottoms on your pizza.

I use the kiln shelves they are the same thing as the BGE stone but don't say BGE. I find my self using the 16" all of the time on the XL. You could use the 21" too but I also have a Large BGE which I can also use the 16" with.

    Several Eggers have used these

Then $60 isn't bad considering the shipping costs to Canada + the exchange rate + duties/taxes.

Still cheaper than paying $90 for the BGE 21"er at the BGE dealer down the road plus taxes.

    Ok thanks.

Seems a little crazy to me as the kiln shelf is almost 3/4" thick as well but that seems to be the modus operadi for pizza on the board so I'll follow it.
