google'd and found this method: lettuce in small glass jar buried with open top leveled with gravel, pulled jar in the morning, worked like a charm ...

I would also add a bit of white wine.

LOL - that brings back memories - neither my wife or I grew up with an aquarium so we didn't know squat so about 42 years ago as newly weds we bought an aquarium at a garage sale and since it was "dirty" I scrubbed it clean with Comet and then we went to the pet store and bought $30 (a BUNCH of money at that time for us) of assorted fish. Needless to say thanks to the Comet residue the $30 in fish were dead by morning. Well we over came that disaster, but before long the tank started getting dirty. I mentioned that problem to a guy at work and he suggested snails. I said "great" where do I get some...to which he replied I have some and can spare a few - how many you want? I said it's a big aquarium and rather dirty now so how about a dozen? He said fine! The next day he brought a bag to work and said "we're friends and I was being selfish with only 1 dozen so here's 2 dozen for you, Buddy". Well - you know the rest of the story - we still laugh about it to this day! Lesson learned? - avoid gifts of snails...let alone female cats which look "fat"!
