O/T a rotten day!

Some of you might remember that we had a house sitter while we were in FL. and while we were down there a friend of her sons stole a book of checks and wrote himself one. thought it was all over... but we came home and the house stunk of cig smoke. even had a coke can full of butts and ashes in one of the bed rooms... a burn hole on the kitchen counter  and some of my plates broken and chipped.
I collect old red ware and have a set of reproductions that I use for every day. We live on a small island off the coast of Maine. it is just 10 miles around it. this winter there was a lot of break ins and robberies.... we went though the house when we got home and everything seemed OK. Neil has a number of old guns and they were all ok. my jewelry such as it is was with us. but my parents live in our back yard. mom called this morning and dads money he was rolling to buy the tires for his '47 merc was missing. they started going through stuff and about half her jewelry was missing. mostly old pieces not really a huge value but family stuff that can't be replaced. and a box of old money that was my grand parents. old coins and silver certificates and such.about 3-4000.00. the place did not look touched and they did not clean it out. the police said they have been staking places out and have a good idea of the routines. ours was easy as we were all in fl for 5 months. We thought the house sitter would help. but now it seems that the son and the friend are all in on it. we had collect calls on our phone bill from payphones out west SC, NV, NB, IL and they think they were making contact for sending the stuff. nothing is kept local so it is harder to catch. unreal. we feel rotten... there were a ton of homes that were broken into.... so sad. and a very yucky feeling... but the eggs were all OK. and the cat was safe and sound. and our homes are here and not trashed.. I guess that is the bright side :ermm: Sorry to ramble so and so off topic. just a sh**ty day. Julie

Julie,
When people break in to your home you feel so violated. I can empathise completely. Specially with your folks. Sorry.

Man...sorry to hear about the bad news. I hope that things will get better for you.

We did the house sitter thing once well twice. First time was a similar problem. Second was my SIL and she trashed our house.
Never again... -
So sad, I hope the police can help. Sorry for all your losses. That's just not right. I hope you change your locks.
-
Sorry about that Julie, did you get your phone situation resolved? -RP
-
Thanks guys. We can't find Neil wedding band now.. he stopped wearing it unless we went out to something special. had a friend at work loose a finger because of his. the house sitter was a "friend" who let her looser son stay here too with out our permission. we found ball bond papers he left here for a breaking and entering charge and theft for something unrelated.
it was funny this fall we put in a new door and lock. a pretty wood one with the beveled glass and a new lock and dead bolt set. we have never locked our house in the 23 years we have lived here. Didn't even have a key to the front door. decided we needed to lock it up with being gone so long. and then went the sitter route. but you can see where someone tried to jimmy the lock and screwed up the trim around the new door. one of the rings was a small ruby with 4 tiny pearls around it that my aunt left my mother. nothing special but meant oh so much to her. they took about 4 rings and left 6 in the case... the cops said they do this to avoid detection. you just don't notice if one or to is missing like you would if they all were. -
That is really sh*#ty Julie. I'm a pretty laid back person but that would be enough to put me in jail if I ever found the sob's. Neil would know,,,under the pool is the perfect place to hide a body
Hope everything else is going well with you both. -
NO. I can't even go there. we got a track phone to have the shops calls forwarded to for the winter. it started the end of DEC and was to stop the first of May. Well the phone company can not get the calls to stop forwarding GR........... and the track phone crapped the bed so we can not call it to get the messages. the phone company said it will be 5-10 business days before they can fix it  so finally I set the answering machine to pick up at 2 rings LOL the poor customers today.... the phone would ring the the 3 of us would take off like hell to get to it before the machine picked up. or it went to the twilit zone of unheard messages. just not a good day all around. hated answering the phone cause it was either the police or mad customers that called and left a message and I never have called back  I think i want to start drinking.......

Good idea, maybe a nice chardonnay.

Julie and Neil,
That all just sucks. Someday I'll tell you what happened to my family. I know it is hard right now with the anger but you are safe and alive. There is always a worse side. I know how it feels to lose precious things. If you want to talk, call me at 519 941 4677

Julie,
That is horrible. The loss & damage, I remember when we were broken into - Christmas Eve one year and we got home very late. At that time the kids were young and we lost a lot of wrapped presents, microwave all my guns & rifles.
The loss & damage is is one thing but the feeling of being violated was something else and just as bad.
I sure am sorry to hear the news for your family.

Julie, wouldn't interstate trafficking make this a felony and invite the FBI? If you aren't the only ones that got hit, seems like a major investigation should be underway...may not get your stuff back, but might protect others.now it seems that the son and the friend are all in on it. we had collect calls on our phone bill from payphones out west SC, NV, NB, IL and they think they were making contact for sending the stuff.
The "feeling violated" is the worst feeling I had when my little place was broken into many years ago...thank God nobody got injured physically--or worse. -
HeHeHe, no Hoss I do not think they were egg heads. they left two sweet lonely eggs on the back porch with all the extra toys they need to cook up a storm.
-
It seems this is a large very organized group. they use teens and young kids to do the dirty work and they really don't seem to have a clue. they left a black pearl ring that is one of a kind in moms jewelry box. it is two mermaids back to back with their arms over their heads and holding a black pearl. my great-great-grand dad found the pearl and mined the gold and had a men and woman's ring made as a set. after my parents divorced my grand mother sent it to my mother and said that she wanted it to go with her, not the baby sitter that had become her new daughter in law

part of why the island is a target is that the police are 30 minutes away. we do not use the police department in Bucksport, only 1/4 mile away... but have to call Ellswroth that is 20 miles away. the boat launch on the end of the island is THE drug center. they can sit right there and watch the bridge to see if the cops are coming. they know that Bucksport can't touch them.
we had a bad accident on the bridge a few years ago. a fire fighter that lives on the island was hit head on by a drunk driver. the cops from town that responded because they knew his truck got written up. but they saved his life. small town politics.... -
we have a beach house on hills beach in biddeford pools, it gets hit every once in a while. nothing of value there but it gets frustrating fixing were they try to get in. thought this year it would definately get hit with the unemployment the way it is. all we lost this year was a tank of fuel oil at the shop. last time we were broken into we got a new toaster, probably from a neighbors that was broken into and whoever was doing the breakins stayed for a few days in the house, probably didnt like our toaster that only cooks one side of the toast. the island out front gets hit every year and access is only at low tide driving on a sandbar or by boat. if they were to get caught, i dont know if the police would even get called, biddeford police are more of a nuisance than anything if your not from biddeford.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Julie, I am just sick over this for you. No one, no one deserves this. I am so very sorry to hear it.
Remember how many truly good people there are out there.
