where can I buy a whole brisket in LA area?

Well, we finally got delivery of our new extra large egg. So far we've cooked a turkey breast and tri tips (two separate cooks) and were totally impressed with the results. We've been lurking on this forum for awhile and doing some reading and we'd like to try a whole brisket. The only problem is, where to buy one? The stores around here only sell the flat cut briskets. Does anyone know a good butcher or meat market in the LA area that sells things like whole briskets and whole pork butts?

  • Thanks! I probably should have mentioned that I live in the Malibu/Calabasas area -- kind of far from South Orange County -- but we do have Smart and Finals near by. I will pay one a visit tomorrow. Thanks again, truly.

Your Mother's day feast sounds delicious. These Eggs are terrific. I look forward to each new cook.

Go to the Smart and Final on Ventura just a block west of Sale. They always have them at a decent price. Also check out Henry's market that just opened in the Warner Plaza, great market.

There's also a resturant depot in van nuys but you got to be in the biz for them to let you shop there, I think.

for whole pork butt, I've gone to the mexican markets. Value+ on Vanowen and DeSoto has them at a decent price. You're gonna have a hard time finding whole pork butt in Calabasas or Malibu. Occasionally Ralphs or Vons might have a few but not often
  • Hey, Big Hound, thank you too. I was thinking about the Mexican markets. I shop at a lot of immigrant markets because I frequently cook Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, and Persian dishes. I'm sort of expanding into American barbeque since we got the Egg.

I did ask about whole pork butts at Valley Produce on Vanowen (near Vanowen and Reseda) in Reseda, and they said they could get me one with two days advance notice. (By the way, if you've never been to Valley Produce you should go. It's a Persian market with a wealth of fresh produce that you can't get anywhere else. They have fresh fennugreek, a myriad of other sorts of fresh greens, many different types of eggplants, wonderful varied spices, etc, etc, etc.)

I will visit Value+ in the very near future. Thanks so much.

  • I usually buy mine at Restaurant Depot which is in an industrial park just south of the Budweiser brewery on Roscoe near the 405. They carry Certified Angus Beef. They also have bone-in pork butt.

Also, Smart and Final carries whole packer cut, cryovac brisket.

I'd pass on ordering the pork butt at Valley Produce if they have to order it. You can get it cheaper on the spot at the mexican markets. Pass on Vallarta markets for butt, they cut them so small.

Valley Produce is okay, good selection of produce, but not as clean as I like. A place to really check out is the Super King Markets. They're a little out of the way for the West Valley, but worth a trip. They have one in Altedena and Eagle Rock. It's Armenian owned so they have a lot of stuff that the majors don't carry. Great produce, great prices, and great sales on ribs and butts.

Also an Asian supermarket market opened up on Nordhoff and Woodley. Pretty good too.
  • Hey, thanks for the tip. I'm always glad to hear about a new immigrant market. I don't think I've been to an Armenian market before, either. It sounds like a trip to Altadena or Eagle Rock is in my near future.

I've heard about the Asian market on Nordhoff and Woodley but haven't been there yet. Glad to hear it's good.

    I do appreciate this info!
  • I'm such a newbie at this that I hadn't heard of "Certified" Angus Beef until I read Dr. BBQ's book just recently. He recommends it highly. I was wondering if there was anywhere to buy it around here. Up to now I've bought beef at Costco and been pretty happy, but I can see my experience is about to expand.

Thank you for this information very much, and good eating to you!
