What is the best way to get rid of and prevent creosote build up on the daisy wheel. Mine is so bad, it gets stuck on the egg and I'm not sure what to do.

put it in the egg next time you do a cleaning burn. For regular maint. just put on the grate when you shut down. Keeps it clean but doesn't lose the seasoning.

Stick it in the Egg and fire it up. Don't put in in a self-cleaning oven in the house or you will never hear the end of it.
  • I agree with FlaPoolman, I automatically put mine on the grate as I shut her down after a cool. No problem, no sticking, no issues.

    Hope this helps.

You all are great. This is essentially the same question I had as I had to take a hammer to get the wheel loose.
    Thanks,

  • Hammer and cast iron should never be used in the same sentence.

Thanks, my husband wanted to get some chemical remover but I didn't want it anywhere near my egg. I knew someone (or many someones) would know the answer!

As usual there are more than one solution to a problem. I personally don't care for the burn off method which products an ugly (IMHO) rusty Miss Daisey. I use the over night soak in an ice cream container of common household ammonia. How often,...you ask...last time was about 3 years ago!

oops - watch the fumes, your hands and don't pour the ammonia down the drain if you are on a septic system.

Thanks for the insight! My 2 year old daisy wheel has already started rusting. Wasn't sure what caused it. I normally put it in after cooking, but did a high temp cleaning not too long ago. The wheel came out starting to rust... What do you do after it starts rusting? Just keep on cooking?

    Thanks...

Get it warm in an oven or after a cook and spray with high temp PAM and wipe with a paper towel. It will look like new. I do all my CI and daisy this way which also keeps them seasoned and free of rust.
