For me it is not the recipe it is the atmosphere. I have made plenty & tried others recipes. Nothing comes close to sipping on one at the Downs on the first Saturday in May. Even the cheap, overpriced ones they sell there.

theres a downs too, what is there a race or something? :laugh: i figure two hours of drinking and a minute of racing. well thats not right, im cracking a beer before first light on the boat, we will save the 2 hours of bourbon for the two hours before race time. i grew up behind the rockingham track and have never watched a race, used to sneak in and walk the stables though.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Ten races on tomorrows card. The first about 10:30 AM. The derby is the 8th or 9th, not sure. I used to always be there by 08:00 AM. It is an event that EVERYONE should see once in their lifetime.
Ten races today too & one with my last name just won a race. I should have gotten a bet down on that one. haha

fish - at the derby it's more like 48 hours of drinking bourbon, and then you vaguely remember a bunch of noisy trumpets and some people screaming about something.
Then you wake up about 3 days later and your head hurts really badly. -

I am no bartender, but I do attempt Mint Juleps in the summer. Sometimes I make them in short glasses and sometimes tall. Have been meaning to pick up some of the traditional silver cups.
I make up a batch of simple syrup and pour a little into a glass I add a few mint leave and crush them into the syrup, I stick in a straw and start filling the glass with crushed ice along with more mint leaves. When glas is filled with packed down crushed Ice I fill the glass with COLD Bourbon. Add a few more sprigs of mint and proceed to drink. Some experts only use the small mint leave that are at the base of the gig leaves.
I am not a purist but it does the job for me.

A recipe without siple syrup
1. 6 - 7 mint leaves in a short glass and 1 teapoon of sugar. Muddle to mix and extract mint flavor
2. Fill glass half way with ice and pour in 3 ounces of bourbon
3. Stir with a spoon until outside of glass frosts
4. Top off with crushed ice and a few mint leaves for garnish
