I now have my Warranty (Felt)Gasket. I also picked up some 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive to help make this one sticks. (My BGE is only 2 months old).
My question is this...
How is the best way to spray this Super 77?
Do I need to concern myself that some spray may end up inside my Egg.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

You can try taping it off, but I've heard of guys spraying the glue in a cup and brushing it on. I sprayed and had good results but brush sounds a lot easier.

I'm thinking of getting some of this as well to reattach my felt and save my new Nomex Gasket till the felt fries. I would think that if you laid out the felt on some news paper and spray the felt, wait a minute or two for it to get tacky and then apply it to the Egg, this would prevent any overspray on the Egg itself.

Were did you find the 3M Super 77 adhesive?

I cut a piece of card board in a circle and put in the inside to block most of the over spray. The inside will burn off. Then I tape off the out side with newspaper. I would not want to get any on the outside of the egg. Make sure you get it up to 350-400 for a little while to burn off the over spray on the inside. Also don't forget to break in the new gasket. (first 5 cooks under 400)

  • Evening all- I had the same concerns with the 77 product. I instead opted for a high temp silicone that went on the egg just like squeezing toothpaste. I returned the 77 and was very happy I did. No issues either. Sorry to be a fly in the ointment.
  • Did you just use Hi-Temp Silcone or also the gasket?
Did use have any issues with a tight seal with dome closed aterwards?
I actually thought about using Hi-Temp Gasket Maker and no Gasket at all.

    it's natural latex contact cement.

you need to spray both the rim and the felt for the best adhesion. i have a rutland with silicon gasket adhesive,, so don't pay any attention to me.

but if i were going to use it, i'd spray the rim free hand from a few inches away. any overspray will wipe off easily with acetone (which is the recommended cleaner, and not going to harm the egg at all). anything inside will burn off easily enough. if you wanted, you could mask it, but that's be overkill IMHO

I just did a Nomex gasket (BTW. FredsBBQ ships to Canada :))...

I sprayed the super 77 in a cup and used one of those cheap foam paintbrushes to slather it on both the rim and the gasket... no overspray... full control..

you are right. no need to spray it to apply it. but at that point (in a cup), it is essentially just contact cement. no need to use super77 specifically. could just go ahead with a small jar of contact cement (would be cheaper than a can of the 77)

super 77 is merely aeroslized contact cement.

Well, I got my Nomex gasket in the mail today, and while we were grilling some burgers on the Egg, I told my better half how I had read the suggestion here to save the Nomex Gasket till the Felt one fried, and then put it one at a later date.

She burst my bubble telling me that I would put the Nomex away and forget where, so I might as well put the Nomex gasket on and save the felt for later if needed, and then if I forgot where I put it, all I would have lost was the old gasket! Unfortunately, she makes a very valid point!

Anyway, the Nomex gasket did come with instructions, so here they are if anyone is interested:

1 Remove lid from Egg (optional) to provide easy access to the gasket.

    2. Pour acetone on both the lid and base gasket and let it set for a few minutes to free the adhesion from the ceramics. (Do not substitute acetone with any other cleaner such as Goo Gone etc.

    3. Remove any remaining adhesive with acetone and a cloth, gently scraping if necessary. Do not sand or scrape any ceramic off the egg.

    4. Applyt 3M Super 77, which is a multi-purpose spray adhesive, to the rim of the top and bottom where the gasket is applied.

    5. Let stand for up to two minutes to become tacky.

    6. Apply the new gasket, being carful not to let the material hang over the inside edge of the rim. Also, do not stretch the gasket material; there is ample material for both top and bottom of your egg.

    7. Replace the lid to the base and retighten the band.

    8. Let sit for 24 hours before use.

    9. The first 4 to 5 cooks keep the temp moderate, not exceeding 400 or so degrees.

    Hope this helps...
  • I got Super 77 from an Industrial Supply House. Only because I could not find it in retail stores up here in Canada.
  • OK BChips, your's is the idea I will proceed with.
I also thought of some of the other suggestions but your's seems like it will be most user freindly.
  • Sorry for the late reply, had to go to dinner...darn customers!

At ant rate, I cleaned off the old gasket as normal, then squeezed a zig zag bead of the high temp silicone onto about an 18-24 inch surface span of the lip of the egg. Then I pushed down the gasket on top of the bead. then repeated the process all the way around. Then repeated the process on the top. Done in about 10 minutes.

    Hope this helps.
