I asked a friend who works on the Boston waterfront what he thought about places to eat. He said " the best seafood places are the ethnic ones, Italian, even Peruvian food. The big chain in town Legal seafood is very good but very expensive. I asked him about BBQ, he said "Boston & BBQ is sort of like Boston & Burritos-there is no regional BBQ that we are know for. That being said, I sell fish to a hole-in-the-wall Red Bones. It might be hard to find if you are not familiar with the subway system.
Hope you have fun!

Red Bones in Somerville is great. Seafood on the Waterfront is pricey. If you are willing to spend the money I am partial to Atlantic Fish Co. on Boylston St. across from the Prudential Mall, or Skipjack's over by the Hancock tower. Neither on the water.

Legal is a staple and is good. I don't think you will be disappointed but not wowed either. Their is also Tod English's place Kingfish Hall in Fan. Hall. Kind of touristy but good lobster rolls. For cheap, and a little bit of a walk, their is a hole in the wall fish place called the No Name Restaurant over by the world trade center. Simple and plain but solid.

Thirdeye, I work in the financial district and am from the area. If you want I'd be happy to offer a couple of suggestions if you wanted to share where you were staying, schedule, etc....just shoot me an email through the site.

For BBQ in addition to Red Bones (best all around) their is also village smokehouse in Brookline. I like their Beef Ribs....

I'll be there 28th-30th. Planning on dinner at Abe & Louie's - any input?

I will probably also eat at Grill 23, and I'll grab me a lobster roll at Summer Shack and maybe some cannoli at Mike's - unless you locals recommend better places.

hey! you considering other options?!?!?! i already have our your airmattress and sleeping bag laid out on the living room floor.

i think no matter where you get a steak, you will be comparing it to the stuff off your own egg. i imagine you can set that aside when you go out, but if it helps avoid the steak-disappointment, i was going to pick up a couple of the 45 day dry-aged ribeyes. unless you want lobster or something.

Modern Pastry (same street) has better cannoli's and eclairs than Mike's. Mike's has better lobster tales (puff filled pastry) and more variety though.

Abe and Louies is very good. My favorite steak. I'm not a fan of Grill 23....couple bad experiences, but others really like it. Right next door to Abe's is Atlantic Fish. I really like that place too. Same ownership.

Summershack is always solid...I think they have one at Logan airport now....

Tuesday night is set aside for nefarious activities with a certain obnoxious forum member. I am waiting for you, errr, I mean him, to ruin a couple nice aged steaks that night.

I still have clients to entertain.....unless you want to go on a 3 day bender. I'm OK with that too.

Second recommendation in as many days for the Purple Shamrock. Looks like a winner to me.

never been there, i put the shamrock on the list because i like it when it first opens and its empty of crowds and noise. good place to start the day with a guinness and boston house chowder. paddys i like packed, first floor and pool table. bell and hand is iffey, sometimes the crowd is all wrong with wispy speaking guys saying soda pop. hope everyone knows that you dont come to boston and use the word sodapop cause some big irish man in a pub will hit you in the back of the head with the big end of a pool stick. i usd to like the littlest pub before it was knocked down as well, i guess they have a new bigger place but i dont look forward to going there

    ah. taking out clients. gotcha.

yeah. i'll screw up the steaks real good. i do this thing now where i microwave them until they are about 145 internal, then i throw them on the grill for 2 minutes a side at 750.

did you work near the beerworks in fenway or the one near sulleys tap, never knew the one near sulleys until i needed to go to the registry this year. good beer at the beer works for those hesitant to drink guinness, great beer lineup and walking distance from all the pubs i mentioned

i was surprised about your recommending the shamrock. it's jammed with tourists unless you go off season or early (lunch is ok) as you mentioned. the bell-in-hand is either empty or filled with tourists too. never in-between

we used to go the the sevens a long time ago. small place in beacon hill, dart board in the back. no tourists. ..by "tourist" i mean crowd. i don't have a problem with tourists per se. just a room full of people having one beer and taking up the tables. hahaha

    I miss the littlest bar...

the purple shamrock is good when it is a nice day and they open the windows....

Saw too many fights (and got caught up in one) there at night when I was younger...

i worked right above the beerworks on canal (at the Garden, not Fenway).

those were the days. it was common to spend three days a week down there, three beers at lunch, and at least once a week drinking til 10 or 11 after work.

was fun, but tyikes. ...one of the reasons i left where i was working, frankly. that's a bad habit. and i was with the BOSS

  • Susan,

As others have said, the seafood choices by the waterfront are overpriced and not very good. Legal used to be good (15 years ago), but they expanded too fast and are just average now.

My favorite seafood place in town is the East Coast Grill, which is in Inman Square in Cambridge. That's a quick cab ride from downtown Boston. The place is run by Chris Schlessenger (sp?) who is a celebrity chef of sorts, and author of the book Thrill of the Grill. They have good fish, some BBQ, and a nice raw bar. Worth checking out.

If you're down in the waterfront area, it's a short walk / cab ride to the North End, which is the Italian section of town, and there are literally dozens of good restaurants there. Some of the smaller ones don't take credit cards, so be aware before you go in.

In terms of BBQ, there is nothing great to recommend, though as others have said, Redbones in Davis Square is probably the best in town. If you're looking for other recommendations, send me an email, and I'll send you my phone number.
