Freezing pulled pork w/o foodsaver
Bash
Posts: 1,011
I've been spending too much on eggcessories, so don't want to buy a food saver just yet.
Short of that, what would be best to freeze pulled pork - ziplock bags, or wrapped tightly in freezer paper and sealed with packing tape?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Richard

Use doulble zipper FREEZER bags an squish out all the air you can before you seal and freeze them.Another trick is freeze in water but I would'nt recommend that for pulled pork!!! :(
-
My recommendation.....make friends and share it with the neighbors, and start fresh next week! :woohoo: It won't be the same after its frozen without being vacuum packed....sorry!
-
I read on the forum to put regular coke in the pulled pork. Thought I would do that. Thanks for the idea of FREEZER bags.

What about WITH the foodsaver? Is it just as good on the reheat?
Maybe I could get it past the wife... -
It is closer, flavor will be fine, but the texture will be off a bit. We use the foodsaver a lot, but mostly for bulk buys and freezing raw foods. Leftovers, well, to me, just are never the same after the freeze. Like I said...make friends with the neighbors! (Ours LOVE us!!) :woohoo: :woohoo:
Also, please understand, I am really super critical of food and food flavors. Spent too many years trying to taste if "something tastes old"....or "just isn't fresh" for business purposes...I know I am super sensitive to certain flavors like that. So, probably better to get more opinions. For me, once a leftover has been frozen, I just can't eat it, foodsaver or not.
But, that is probably just me.
(And no, not really a total food snob....eating Spaghetti O's as I type....LOL!!)
Happy cookin!

Yep,if you reheat the pork, vaccum sealed,in boiling water.
I am not about to argue with LC.Hell she's a real chef! But in my defense I have frozen pulled pork in "all the air squeezed out FREEZER bags"and reheated.I admit it was not as good as when cooked "fresh"But it did'nt suck.Put it on a bun with all the fixin's and feed a bunch of drunks. They will think you are the next FOOD NETWORK star!!! :woohoo:

:woohoo: :pinch: :silly:
.Nothin like "comfort" food!!! :ermm: :woohoo:
:P  -
Richard,
Several people have mentioned regular coke to reheat pulled pork. Recently I rewarmed some and used water plus a small amount of apple juice. Concerned that 12 oz. of regular coke adds about 240 additional sugar calories! -
Next week my 'kick' may be Stouffers mac n cheese, or Campbells Soup....cooking for a couple hundred all day, sometimes you just gotta 'nuke some comfort'!  :woohoo:

I didn't say that.... :pinch: :woohoo: -
Bash....Listen to Hoss....life will be much easier!
I can only pray you never have to be as critical as I! It is a curse at times, really!! -
I won't tell!
And comletely understand!!!
-
Clark....You rewarmed...how did the AJ work for you? Recommend it for a re-heat? Had it been frozen?

I have been playing with some pulled pork and trying to find some good alternative flavors - not too far off but a little zing...
Most of the time there is just the two of us here so cooking 4 to 8# butt is going to result on one big meal or some left overs.
If I am going to use the meat within a week to 10 days I will wrap tightly in plastic wrap then either ziplock or put it in a bigger plastic bag.
If much longer then 10 days I will wrap tightly in plastic wrap then into freezer gags with as much air removed as possible. After that foodsaver time.
I have read over and over about using coke when reheating. I tried it yesterday and it works great. I was really concerned I would taste the coke flavor but it just wasn't there.
Anyway when you do a cook, cook some extra or save some. The try a few different wrapping ideas. Defrost then re-heat the food. It won't take long to figure if you like or don't like a particular method.
Wish I have LC's training, I know if I like something or not but for the most part I am at a complete loss as how to change/fix something that isn't quite where I want it. Sometimes I guess and it ends up going the wrong way then it disposal time.

Michelle,
I had cooked 2 butts on a Wednesday. I saved one in a aluminum pan, covered in the frig and reheated it on Saturday for a picnic - never frozen. I put it in a low temp oven, poured about about 1/4 cup of apple juice plus about 1/2 cup water in the pan and stirred it around before reheating. Tasted good. I did not mix any BBQ sauce with this - served on the side.
I vacuum-packed the other pulled butt, with about a pint of meat per bag. I have not rewarmed any of that, though I have given a couple of bags away. (Haven't had any negative feedback, yet).
Like I said in the post, 240 or so extra calories (pure sugar) from the coke, just didn't appeal to me. -
Get a ziploc vacuum bagging system for $5 at the grocery store. The work fantastic and keeps the flavors fresher. It is a fantastic product!

I have a small vacuum unit made by Reynolds. The same company that makes sandwich bags. Costs about $10. Gallon and quart size bags are available. Not as great as a full size unit but works pretty good for me. In the same aisle with kitchen bags. FG

this won't help with ur current problem, but at the kroger(a grocery store in ATL) at the end of the summer, they put their food savers on clearence
I bought a vacuum sealer for 20 bucks, but that wasnt the deal. I BOUGHT 2 rolls of bags for 2.26 each
I bought all the bags they had. I figured when I run outta bags if I cant find any more on sale then I'll get rid of the vacuum sealer.
The bags retail for 20.00 for 2 rolls now if any of you know me personally, you'll know theres no way in hell i'D PAY that much
good luck
