lighting lump

picked up a used egg this past week, forgot to get the wood starters from head quarters. what is best way to start lump. live in small town, no grocery stores have the wood plank starters. neither does lowes..... help.

  • I use a chimney starter, filled with lump. I then measure a 1 shot glass full of 91% rubbing alcohol(I buy this at Walmart), let that soak for 20 secs, then light. After 10-15 mins my lump is ready to pour over charcoal I have in bottom of egg. I then watch temp to adjust my vents as my fire gets up to temp I am wanting to cook with. Even low and slow temps(250) I start my fire this way. Works every time, no fuss no muss.
  • Go to Lowes and get a chimney starter.

    If you need to, come back here and ask for directions on using the chimney starter.

    Lightly soak napkin with cooking oil and light. I stress the term lightly. Sometime in the future get a mapp torch.

    easiest thing, with materials you always have on hand:

    two paper napkins or some paper towel. drizzle lighlty (do not soak, do not pour) with a little cooking oil or even olive oil (it's what i have handy).

    just a couple thin little "Zs" back and forth on each. twist into loose sticks, light each end and put them down into the lump with some pieces of lump bridging across. i fiddle a bit longer, by piling lump over them, but as long as they are buried they will do fine. lid open if you want, or at least vents wide open until the paper burns off. this leaves no ash when done correctly, and throws more flame than any method other than the weedburner, which is fastest.

    thanks, i had heard about rubbing alchol but was not sure....again, thanks for the answers..

    Quite a few different ways to start your EGG. The cheapest is to use a napkin, twist it to a cigar shape and drizzle some ccoking/olive oil on it. Don't try to soak it through, just a splattering of oil and then light it. Place a few pieces of lump over it in a Teepee shape allowing air ot get to it and wait with the dome open. In a few minutes you;ll have a good bit of lump lit and you'll be ready to cook in as little as 20 minutes.

    Second way tis to use some 91% alcohol, found in Wally World in the pharmecy (sp) section. Drizzle some of that on the lump and light. Leave the lid open and allow all the alcohol to burn off, and you hsould be ready to cook in 15-20 minutes.

    The third way is to invest in a MAPP torch. Light it and place it about 6-10" away from the lump. Use the heatfrom the torch to light the lump. You are just wasting gas if you try to use the hottest part of the blue flame. Good to go in about 10 minutes. This is the way I light my EGG.

    The final way is to use an electric starter. I have never used one but others swear by them.

    I agree. I have tried most lighting techniques mentioned here and like this one the best. It is very fast and clean.

    The Weed burner from Harbour Freight is a real barn burner that you will need a propaine tank to fuel it. I like mine very much and you really don't have to go turbo with it.
