Gaskets R&R

Rec'd my med-BGE Xmas week. Lost gaskets on first cook. Had gaskets replaced under "warranty" but the gaskets failed after about half a doz or so cooks. It looks like the double sided tape failed in addition to a poor stretched gasket installation that allowed the gaskets to burn crisp in many places.

So I emailed BGE and they sent me a nomex gasket. I have the acetone and 3M Super 77 glue and plan to do the job tmo morning.

Looking for any and all coaching (seems like a straight forward job). I'm thinking why not only install gasket on the lower unit? Thoughts?

Thanks - need to get back to eggin'!

I have found 91% alcohol works better in cleaning the adhesive.

There are a huge amount of gasket posts with a lot of instructions. Do a search, order by date also include 'gasket' in the body when doing the search.

Thanks, I've been reading the posts. Just looking for any new info and/or insight.
  • What Kent said plus search "nomex" also. Mark
  • One innovation that came up awhile ago was to spray the 3M 77 into a cup and then apply with a dauber (sp?) instead of directly spraying the rims of the Egg. Overspray is awful when used according to instructions.

  • Whether you spray the 77 on, or put it on with a brush don't apply the glue all the way around in one shot. They say it dries quickly, do it in spots. Also, apply glue to the gasket and the egg, and wait a while for it to get tacky. I forget how long that takes. Good luck, and welcome to egging.

    Check your email.

I have sent some details on cleaning the surface, checking the dome to base fit, and a detailed dome alignment procedure.

Cleaning the dome and base is pretty easy. On a large removal shouldn't take much more than 20 to 30 minutes - both sides.

If the links don't come through then email me directly and I will resend outside the forum.

I'm thinking the same thing about applying the Nomex only on the bottom. Let you know how it turns out. Been egging without a gasket for 5 months now.

GG, thanks for email and txt.

Fred's Guitar and BBQ had a video on the install too.

I already had the acetone so next time I'll try the high-test alcohol. I did however use a silcone basting brush to dab the Super 77 on the lip and I installed both top and bottom gaskets this time - will go to a single gasket next time. Unit undergoing a 24 hour cure.

Question: the nomex gasket sent by BGE was sized for, I guess, the width of a large BGE, etc., not the medium I have. So there's overhang on the outside of the Egg. Any harm leaving the execess alone.
