I'm looking at the Cub Cadet 42" deck for $1799. Is Cub Cadet a good mower? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Tom

Don't know about the brand (a lot of them are made by the same company, MTD).

If I had it to do over again I would get a zero turn with bagger. The tractor for me is a little bit of a pain...turning radius, backing up, etc

I don't have a large yard so I can't justify the expense. Thanks for the info. Tom

I am going off memory but I believe Cub Cadet is owned/made by MTD. I went through this last year and decided to by a Deer

Just looked....Cub Cadet is made by MTD, as is Troy bilt, yard machines, bolens, and several others.

Here are the consumer reports recommendations
Best for most, with versatile mowing; all are CR Best Buys:

    • John Deere LA115 , $1650, CR Best Buy
    • Craftsman 28828 , $1650, CR Best Buy
    • Craftsman (Sears) 28724 , $1500, CR Best Buy
    • Craftsman (Sears) 28713 , $1300, CR Best Buy
Choose the Deere for its easy mode changes and washout port, and the Craftsman 28828 or 28724 model for relatively large yet smooth-cutting decks. The lower-priced Craftsman 28713 trades the usual infinitely variable hydrostatic drive for gears.

I have a CReports online ID so if you have any specific needs or want more info feel free to email me and I will look it up for you.

  • Customer service is something to consider. I bought mine Deere from a local dealer (not a big box) and I am very happy. I know who to call if I need parts or service. They are picking up my mower on Monday for it's yearly service.

We had a Deere LX172 for 15 years and sold it with our previous home (it was the buyers' only additional request - that we include it in the deal). Outstanding machine, easy use, easy to maintain, easy to get parts (belts, filters, etc.) for. Usually I did the lawn mowing and Steve did the trimming and the big tractor shredding (also a Deere), so I got a lot of "seat time" on it and can highly recommend one.

These aren't the Deeres you buy at the big box stores, they're the ones you buy from a JD dealer. I don't know anything about the ones sold at places like Homey de Poh

I have had a JD LT155 for 9 years and it looks and runs as good as day one. I have had zero problems and nothing but happy. Maybe nothing does run like a deere.

I've got a Cub Cadet 50in zero turn. Mowing the yard is like going to the carnival. Love it!

Civil eggineer got it right.....JD LT 155 is a great machine. Had my for 7 years, no problems. Don't know what the equivalent tractor is now, but deere dealers would know. Good luck!

  • I am a John Deere Man myself I have an LT 133 with the Motor sport package. Like said earlier Customer Service is number 1. Do not get a John Deere from HD and think you have a John Deere, They are not a true JD. They are made by MTD or Murry as well. Get it from the dealer. It dosent matter if it is 10 years old or 75 years old you can satill get parts. My LT 133 is 15 years old and going strong. It has a Kohler engine and runs like new. I belive there is one mower if you are looking for a rider, John Deer. Plus it will match the Egg!

I've got the 48 zero turn radius. My lot is full of trees and landscaping rocks. I would highly reccommend it. Need to get some blocks for the pedals though

Get a John Deere but get a real John Deere, not one from the BORG. It will be the last lawn tractor you will ever need.

Almost forgot....look at prices for used riding mowers. You will be shocked at what a 20 year old beat up JD mower will bring. Nothing, nothing, will hold its resale value like a JD mower.
