Your local hardware store or anyplace like home depot should have them.
-
I'm sure you can get them online, but it is easier to just go to Home Despot or an equivalent store. They aren't that expensive.

The nearest HD is 60 miles away and not worth the drive for a pair of gloves :ermm:aka marysvilleksegghead

I also use welding gloves - next door neighbor is an Iron worker. Nice leather with wool inside.
Protip - keep them inside and as DRY as possible. I had to yank a platesetter out of a hot fire once, and unfortunately had to hold it for 6 or so seconds...nice little steam batch on the hands due to the moisture in the gloves from being left outside.
Good luck -
Google 'Orca' for hi-temp silicone gloves.

Thanks for the info 'bout the platesetter move, that is what I was curious about, something to hold a dam hot item for a few seconds while it is being lifted off and moved.aka marysvilleksegghead

Oops! Mine are sitting outside on my porch. Need to bring them in tonight.
Thanks for that common sense tip. (Wife says I'm down a quart on common sense). -
Found some "Gourmet" brand leather gloves at Academy Sports in the BBQ section.
Got some Orka's for my birthday :

I have Orka gloves, they are great for handling a hot plate setter, but that is about it. They are like a lobster claw, no dexterity. I have a small pair of leather gloves and over that I put a pair of lineman's gloves, they work well, but if wet of greasy the heat goes thru leather fast. The key is planning ahead so when you're handling something hot it is a "pick em up and put em down" situation.
-
You are Soooo right.
Even the Orkas can get quite hot when you turn around with a platesetter or hot skillet and have to look for a place to set it down ! Planning ahead is a "learned" experience.
-
Ove gloves are good BUT YOU NEED TO WEAR SOME TYPE OF HEAVY LEATHER OVER THEM!!!!!
-
I'm also a Orka fan and find them "hands down" better than leather welding gloves which I also use for lighter duty temps. The Orkas are rated at 500 degrees but I know I have exceeded that those times I have used them to clear out hot coals when it was time to go home. True, you can't pick up a dime with them but when I'm putting my hands in harms way I'm not picking up dimes anyway!

I have had great luck with these: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/productIndex.shtml?from=Search&newSrch=yes&operator=keywordSearch&search_type=keyword&action=Go!&QueryString=Glove+700+kevlar&submit.x=0&submit.y=0Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I use welding gloves. I run a steel fabrication shop for a living, and have easy access to gloves. Welding gloves come in all different levels of dexterity and protection. A pair can run anywhere from $6 to $30. Cowhide or elkhide would be my top choice for BBQ (elk giving better feel, and flexibility over time, but more expensive). Higher quality gloves will be well insulated (layer or layers inside the glove) and probably stitched with kevlar thread. Ove gloves are pretty good they are a nomex/kevlar mix. The hi-temp silicone mits do offer good protection, but you loose some dexterity. Sorry for such a long post, I hope it was at least helpful.

Another vote for cheap weilder gloves. I still use the pair I started with 2 years ago. About 1/4 inch of grease and ash but that just adds chacter!

Welding gloves for the high temp is what I use...I also have a pair of leather work gloves lying around that are a little handier to put on for medium heat i.e. moving a grate to add more wood chunks, and a pair of pilot's gloves that are made of nomex with leather palms that are good for just general use...I guess I'm a lil overboard with gloves
