I looked at my local The Home Depot and only found Cowboy brand. I may just have to get BGE brand at the Hearth and Patio Shoppe where the egg was purchased.
-
This was at restaurant depot not home depot. Some have had luck at wallartt. I personally won't shop

If you have a Wally World nearby, they will often have USA R.O. at a decent price.
I need to restock and was thinking about running by there on the way home. Last time I bought some it was $6.37 or so for 10#.
They also have great prices on Western brand bags of wood chips. -
There are a few Piggly Wiggly s around here that have RO for $10 for a 20lb bag. That may be a place for you to try if you have one around you.
-
No Piggly Wiggly's here. My WalMart did not have any lump at all, just briquettes. The did have the Western Mesquite and Hickory chips and chunks. Got a Hickory chunk. Down to half a bag of BGE lump. Need to gear up for a big cook. I want to smoke a Butt and a Chuck Roast together for a pulled pig and cow feast.I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

The local Walmart here in SW Iowa just started carrying it for $6.37@ 10#. Ace hardware had some cowboy for $12.99@ 20# personally I like the RO better

I'll have to look again. Cooking on the egg is NOT a seasonal thing. They should always carry it.I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

Hey neighbor look closely at the RO bag, is it really 20# or is it 17.83#'s????....just checking cause their price went up and their total weight went down...
-
I went to a Walmart in the Sandy, UT. They were stocked up on RO and Kingsford Charwood. $6.97 & $7.00 respectively for 10lbs bags.
Since I am new to the Egg I wasn't sure how much to get for stock. Two things tell me I may need to get more. One is that the RO seems to be seasonal at Walmart I may go back and get more. Two, I will likely want to feed the fire in the belly of my BGE monster often since I am in the learning stage.
I got 3 of the RO and 1 of the Charwood. The purchase of the Charwood was more for curiosity on my part as it only rated an Average on NakedWhiz. -
A lot of people buy the lump by the pallet. I feel like I am running low as I have fourteen 20# bags...
for gosh sakes man go get some more.... -
14 20lb. bags? Are you making breakfast lunch and dinner for 12 every day?I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

Now I am in a panic!
I am getting the courage to up to ask my boss if I can take a 4 hour lunch, borrow his truck, and run to at least 4 Walmart's to buy their stock of RO. -
Kim's a lightweight.
I try to buy it at least 400# at a time.
-
I bow to the master... :P
but I still have more rings on my table to hang stuff...
-
You guys must have plenty of room to store that much lump! I recently bought 4 bags and had to find room in my garage for it. I guess that means I'm gonna have to prioritize - lawn mower, wife's car / oops, I meant MY truck - OUT !!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:
-
What do y'all think about storing the stockpile under the house in the crawl space? It's not wet under there, but it can get a little damp and humid. Any side effects of moist lump?I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

Can't help you with that. Most of our construction is on slabs - no crawl space.
-
Any moisture at all could affect lighting, getting to temp etc. Lump can get moist sitting on a concrete slab, in a basement, or in any moist environment etc. I put some sturdy shelves on the garage wall and store it up there, keeping it off of the cement floor.
My own opinion would be to not put it in a crawl space. If it isn't well ventilated it probably is pretty humid.
Someone has a shed mostly devoted to lump...maybe sundown..not sure but someone once posted a pic. -

All I can tell you is that the bag says 20# but I have not actually weighed them. $5 per 10lbs seems to be a good price for that lump.
I am using a Kingsford/Wicked mix right now which works extremely well but I do not buy wicked to often because of the price, even with me getting it for 20% less than most people. This is the greatest signature EVAR! -
I agree with Chris. Keep it on a shelf in a dry place whenever possible...
-
Here in the SF Bay Area, the WallyWorld sells USA RO 10# bags for $5.79. Since it is half price of the BGE stuff, and getting lump other than Mesquite is almost impossible, I stocked up with a dozen to keep me going for a while.
Your crawlspace will be much too humid unless you are in AZ. Right now my lump is in the garage, but I am not too big of a fan of having extremely high quality combustibles in the same room that is most likely to have a fire. Can you imagine a whole wall of oak lump going at once? So much for your 5/8" fire rock.
I am a big fan of the dedicated exterior shed.

Fidel reminds me of stocking up here on the Gulf Coast getting ready waiting for a Hurricane.

Maybe I shouldn't use the "H" Word. The past few years have been good. anyone ever hear of B&B brand? I saw it at Academy Sports.
-
Hey Panhandle,
Much to early in the year to start with the "H" word, we'll hear it often enough, soon enough for sure.
I live in a small park model mobile home, not very mobile but thats what they are called, and have no room for storage. I used to have a storage shed but "H" Charlie scattered it over three counties along with the porch it was attached to. Now I store a couple Publix 8.8 pound bags (made by RO, $5.49) in a large trash bag inside a tight rubbermaid trash barrel. I have a medium egg and cook for one. This seams to keep my lump fresh and I can always pick up more with 4 Publix within 4 miles of here.

We have been very blessed. My only casualty during Ivan was a mailbox pulverized by a big southern Live Oak and a few Shingles scraped off by a limb. I couldn't believe it. I parked my vintage Airstream between the houses under another Live Oak and crossed My fingers. 15 in dia limbs all around it not one touched it. They would have crushed it like a beer can. I was glad it survived. Hot water and air conditions are under rated. You must be in Tampa area.
-
While you folks are out shopping for Lump keep your eyes out for OZARK OAK especially at wally world, its some good stuff at a good price.
-
Thanks for the advice; keep it high and dry, and buy lots when you have the chance. I have a shelf in the garage in mind.
Worried about the combustibles in the garage? It already holds two cars, a gas furnace and a gas hot water tank. How much more combustible can some charcoal be? The gas will go up instantly. At least with the lump, you'll have to wait fifteen minutes.I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

Hi Eddie, I'm a further south in Fort Myers. Charlie tipped my house half way over, the only reason it didn't go all the way was because my 16' Old Town canoe was stored under that side. It was a sad story for the canoe. The porch and shed were gone. Tornado's were seen going right up through here. I found the screen door about 100' down the road and that was it. Wilma opened my secondary roof like a can of sardines. When Andrew was headed this way I ran like hell, all the way to Ocala. Fortunately it missed us, that was one scary storm. I don't think this place will take anymore big storms. I have an egg because anything else will get blown away.
Glad to hear you have been lucky, I keep my fingers crossed and pray every "H" season.
