Well, so far so good. 172 butts are either cooking or about to be cooking. 800 burgers and who knows how many hot dogs are waiting for tomorrow. We got a close up look at a Black Hawk helicopter, and of course have been watching them fly around all day. The colonel got his steak and is quite interested in these things called Big Green Eggs, lol! So, tomorrow the weather is supposed to be crap and we serve at 5, so wish us luck. That's a lot of pork to pull in the drizzle and 40 degrees! It is amazing how grateful these guys are for a little thing like cooking them some BBQ when it is the least we can do for them before they deploy to Afghanistan. I'd post a few photos, but I'm beat. Tomorrow's gonna be a long day!

That should do it. Don't want to go too far...it might have a long lasting effect.

I'm guessing that with the skills you guys have so finely tuned, that you should save the "Luck" for the golf course. I've dropped quite a few jaws telling friends about your acts of grateness. :)

    Stay dry

    Thanks for representing the country

It was just enough to take care of them at Ft. Bragg tomorrow. I'd wish for some rain for you, but it concerns me to send mixed messages. :P

Next year I'll try to bring a couple of bowl choppers to the feed. They can do 4 butts in about 15 seconds. You guys are doing great work. Nobody deserves it more then are men/women of our armed forces. God Bless you all. Tom

Damn, you guys are great to be doing this. I could not survive in that weather at this stage of life. Was in that kind of stuff in the army but was only 21 or so.

Y'all are doing this for a wonderful cause and bless ya for it.

    Hope it all goes well.

  • INVASION UPDATE:
I arrived much too late for dinner but am told it was Eggceptional with Pete's steaks.

The invasion of Fort Bragg is in progress and one casualty was taken (one dropped Egg is now hors combat...). Pete and Doug were about to turn out the lights at 1:30 AM, with all butts loaded. Based on the cook team size and the eating group size, it looks like each one of us needs to cook for about 180.

Temperature is high 40s but feels colder due to damp air and wind.

The Egg area (other smokers and trailers elsewhere):

"Sparky" loading the last six butts:

Nothing like an XL BGE when you have a crowd:

Sgt. Wolf glowers at an Egg that is slow to come to temp:

    Time to rest for tomorrow...

Great job guys! I'm proud to know all of you!
  • For those who have been supportive in many ways, I wanted to provide a quick update. Naked Whiz took many photos and I'm sure he will be posting them soon.

The event was a success. We served from 5-9 PM inside a big hangar that had country music artists on a stage at the other end. The Egg contingent had 4 larges and 1 XL, but cooked less than 1/4 of the pork served, as there were several other large-scale cookers present (think county-fair sized commercial units). All meat was chopped and combined with the same sauce, so I can't give any comments on how Egg results compared to the other much more expensive cookers.

Cooking conditions were really a challenge. The temperature dropped into the 30s with significant wind and a near-constant drizzle all day. It was so cold that one of the steel cookers that had been planned for burgers and hot dogs was started early just to provide a warmer spot within Camp BBQ. Pete (Celtic Wolf) and Doug ("Sparky") slept onsite despite abominable conditions and the challenges of one broken egg and 2 broken DigiQs. The first DigiQ had its case pop open. The second DigiQ had no clip for the dome probe, so it wasn't providing reliable measurements.

The soldiers and chain of command were hugely grateful. If memory serves, I believe they said that within a few weeks they will be taking 171 helicopters and 2700 troops to Afghanistan. The total value of their inventory is 3/4 of a billion dollars. The commander presented Pete with a very special honor (I'm not sure, but I think I saw CW smile  ). Each of us received several souvenir coins and medallions, as well as a personalized certificate of appreciation signed by the commander.

Dizzy Pig provided support and their products performed well. The troops loved the food, and some of them came back 3 and 4 times.
