Starting an Egg with no fire starters

Any suggetions on the best way to start it until I can get some more fire starters.

I reall want to grill tonight but don't want to use lighter fluid.

Ditto what Fidel said. I twist about a dozen and put them in a zip lock bag and then pour in just enough cheep vegi oil to soak them all. I keep them with my egg stuff and then they are always ready. I just crisscross two in the center and put a few light pieces of lump on then and light all 4 ends. close the dome and take of the daisy wheel and open the bottom fully. don't leave it for more than 5 minutes though as it can get away from you fast.

no need to soak, by the way. it isn't the oil that's burning. or the paper. it's the oil and paper together.

somehow it's gone nutty and folks are soaking the paper....

such a simple idea gets a life of its own! hahaha

not my idea, by the way. but i cannot remember the guy here who mentioned it first.

i use two. a d-r-i-z-z-l-e of oil (just enough to make the paper translucent) is enough. if you twist it and oil drips, you are wasting oil

LOL yes Stike you are right

I do not have any extra in the bag when I fix mine. and not all the towels are soaked or evenly coated. I just like having them done up and ready when I am. also I would not use Evo. it is a waste I think to use it for that. just the dollar store vegi oil.
hhmmm.... maybe I can find some rib notes in ocala or even a secret chili recipie LOL :evil:

Ziplock bag full of cotton balls and soaked in rubbing alcohol. This works great, and $2 will start a year's worth of cooks.

I use 'used' oil that would otherwise be discarded. Strain it into a plastic container through a paper towel, then dip away when needed - zippylip

All these ideas will work, eventually

But to really start the fire in record time, use a propane torch, you know one used for plumbing. It not only will light the lump, but give you a tan doing it :blink:

a regular propane torch (blue-bottle) is a pain in the.... clock. three spots, hanging around pointing at the lump for a minute each. zzzz

get a weedburner. that's propane, and shoots a ball of fire that will light the egg instantly. that's the fastest way yet

i find the paper towel thing never fails, i always have supplies on hand, and i just do food prep for the fifteen minutes it takes to hit temp.

I used to use firestarters all the time until I ran out once and tried the paper towel/oil method. Now that's all I do!

I don't like to have to babysit a torch to start my cook, so I light up the papertowels and let 'em go. I start prepping my meal and check every so often and close the dome when they're all burned up.

From what I've read on this board, it doesn't sound like a torch really gets you cooking any faster. still have to get clear smoke first.

I know I am new to the whole Eggnation but what about using a charcoal chimmey? Does that qualify as starting an egg with no fire starters? Just a newbie asking. Sorry if it is an ignorant question.

Yes that will work but the time it takes the chimney to get going you Egg could be ready to go using the other methods mentioned.

I have used dryer lint when backpacking to start a fire. Has anyone ever tried using that to start the Egg?
