Knife shapeners: edge pro vs. wicked edge

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I'm thinking of dropping $200 for a good knife sharpening system. I've tried the Lansky and don't like it. Right now it's a toss-up between the EdgePro Apex and Wicked Edge. Can anyone help me make the decision?

I've had the EdgePro for several years. Don't know anything about the Wicked Edge. I am very happy with the EdgePro. Depending on the condition of the knife it can take a while to get a good edge back. I got great results with a wide variety of knives of different sizes and quality, including a small pocket knife.
  • I have the edgepro also and would recommend it highly. I looked at the wicked edge when I was buying also. First, I wasn't too up on having 2 stones. More future costs for consumables. I also like that you move the knife with edgepro instead of it being stationary. Depending on how particular you are, IMHO you can get a more consistent edge with the edge pro due to moving the knife instead of the stones. That being said, either will outdo the Lansky!

Think long and hard but, first take a look at this little package.

Bought this at a gun show a number of years back and since, have purchased the same set for both of my daughters. They no longer need Dad to come sharpen their knives! It's simple and straightforward even I can do put a razor sharp edge on any knife including my serrated edge Spyderco knives.

Interesting, didn't know that there were multiple types!

I have one that is black with only one set of steels that I purchased years ago at a swap meet. I've tried it a few times, and honestly not that impressed.

It is an "Edgemaker", but they've either changed their product, or the guy I bought it from didn't know about the multiple setup (probably both).

Have to look into this a bit more (I'm a sucker for knife sharpeners)

My big Chef's Choice 120 just gave up the ghost, and it's probably so much $$ to repair it. Thinking about the Apex system myself.

  • I have used a look alike product of Edgemaker - actually 3 or 4 different types. One of the set has medium & fine rods, the fine does a pretty nice job. Sometime I want something better.

Does anyone have any experience with the Master Grade sharpeners?

  • Thanks for the suggestion. Looks good, I'm going to try it, at worst I'm out $30, but I may well save $170. Plus, like you, I have several daughters with dull knives so you may have solved my problem of what to get them for Christmas as well. :)
