So my egg won't really cool down

My egg is completely closed, ceramic top on, vent totally closed, platesetter on top of the grid for storage. Yet it has been running at like 200 since I shut her down at about 7.

I had a strange cook, a lot of flare ups when the egg was open. A few times when trying to bring it down if I opened the bottom vent at all I could hear flames igniting inside the egg.

I screwed up on the cook, I filled the box up with my lovely GFS lump (see previous post). I did not have a lot of ash in the bottom, no small pieces clogging anything to my knowledge. She was working fine, stable at 300 until I brought her up to searing temp, then brought her down to 400 fine. When I put the cedar planks on (2) I think that is where the problems started. I crammed the second one in there and I do not think there was an enough air getting through and it caused a lot of smoke and flareups when I opened the egg.

I get that, I packed the planks too tight. But why is the egg not cooling down after almost 3 hours of being "SHUT DOWN"? Any theories? I am kind of freaking out because it is on my deck and the post from yesterday is burned (no pun intended) in my head about eggcidents.

thoughts?
thanks
tim

ps the salmon on the plank was pretty smokey but ok, the salmon my wife made me put in foil for her was awesome! first time with salmon on the egg, second time cooking it in general

  • If you got all that ceramic up to searing temps, it can take quite awhile for it to cool back down. Don't sweat it....let it ride. If you find zero lump left tommorrow, then you may have an air leak, but my guess is you're okay.

Sorry about the tough cook, but it happens!

See how good the Egg is holding temps like that? Great isn't it!
  • Yeah right, I was pissed too because I was going to buy some spareribs for lunch tomorrow, and I could have just thrown them on there and not worry about anything!

When I first got into smoking with my ECB, I heard people on other boards talk about the myth where an egg could cook a butt with both vents shut, while it was cooling down from a big cook. It made me want an egg, when I got it, I started thinking it could not happen. Well maybe it could, maybe it could!

I had the same problem and after taking a close look the top was not sealing on the back right side. Clamped the spring assist, and readjusted the top. Not only did that make the shut down faster but I'm using a lot less Lump. I now think it was that way for quite some time as now I'm getting a lot more cooks out of a bag of lump. I aslo think in came on slowley and that is why I did not notice it rught away.
