Hot hot heat...needed

I'm having a bit of trouble getting my lg egg hot fast. By hot I mean 400+ and by fast I mean under 20mins. Seems to take an hour to get raging.
My gasket is in decent shape, not great.
I cleaned the be-jesus about of the egg, so I know it is getting air flow.
Charcoal is new and decent.
Not getting hot enough with lid open or closed.
Seems like a recent problem.
Suggestions?

Is the firebox lined up correctly with lower vent? Is your lump charcoal fairly new? Are you lighting the lump in at least 2 places? That's all I got. Good luck to all. Tom

make sure the firebox opening is facing the front draft door. Also be sure you cleaned behind the firebox. Take it out, clean the holes and all the ash behind it.
I would put new lump in the egg, light it in 2 or 3 spots, leave the dome open to get the fire good and establiseh with all the drafts open. Once the coals are lit good, close the dome with the daisy wheel completely open. It should be going in no time. -
Where are you storing your charcoal? It needs to be stored in as dry a place as you can manage. Also, try leaving the dome open for the first 10-15 minutes to maximize the air to the coals.

If this a new problem, and everything else is good, you may have bought a bad bag of lump. I had a bag I used the same day I bought it, and it would not get up to temp. It did not appear wet, but my guess is that it had a lot of moisture in it.

Sounds to me like you are not getting a well established fire. I start mine with a weed burner, in 3 places,2, 6, & 10 on a clock face. I go at least 15 sec. per place, but more often, about 20 sec. I leave the dome open for a minute to be sure the spots are glowing, then close with the bottom wide open, and the daisy off.
Usually, it takes 10 minutes to get to 200, then 5 - 7 to 300. After 400, it climbs 100/min till it tops out. If you are not getting a rise like that, there has to be an air flow block. With used lump, and/or damp conditions, 25 - 30 is expected. -
The heat in an egg is created by fuel and air. Moisture in the lump could be a consideration and something you will have to determine.
I am not a huge believer in the fire box opening having to be exactly lined up with the lower vent. Free air entering the lower vent will flow into the heat draw.
The draw is in two places. Throught the fire box openings and outside the fire box up on the outside of the fire ring. That outside fire box/fire ring air does not feed the lump directly.
Have enough lump in the fire box, at least up to the top of the fire box and even higher if you find that necessary. Make sure your fire grate holes are free of dust and or smaller chunks of lump. Have some bigger size lump in the lump stack.
Light the egg in 3 or 4 places and just a little under the surface of the lump.
Leave the bottom vent & screen wide open (don't leave the egg during this time), top vent uncovered. Leave the dome open until the lump has a good light 5 minutes or so.
As the open flame begins to die down close the dome leaving vents open. As long as there is flame inside the egg you will have a high spike temperature. As the open flame dies out the dome temp will go lower. As the lump heat develops your temp will begin to climb again.
You should see a steady climb in temp and soon should see a the temperature spiking. Before the fast spike your dome temp should be in the 400° - 500° range.
This spiking is when the air flow allows the lump to flame up once again - you will be quickly heading to well above 700° - that high temp is the actual flame once again. You should see the blue flame coming out of the dome of the egg.
Vents should have been restricted before this stage in most cases.
If you are looking for quick lighting and higher temperatures block the free air movement on the outside of the firebox and fire ring. One should easily be able to light and egg and get to 400 - 500 degrees stable within 10 to 12 minutes. 700° stable within 15 minutes.
This is accomplished by forcing all incoming air into the firebox and the only exit is through the lump.
Extremely fast lighting and high temperature stabilization can also be accomplished by using a weed burner to light.

Do you have the weed burner flame dialed down?
30 seconds of weed burner and my large would be at 400° or higher & stable within another minute or so.
I can easily be cooking on the egg at 400° within 10 minutes by lighting with a weed burner.

I new to the Egg, what is a weed burner? Thanks.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum.
Here is a link to a lot of different weed burners. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=weed+burner&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=1143562361&ref=pd_sl_67hsg1ilfv_b

Thank you very much

maybe you are hotter than you think

  Lazy is one word I'm sure is never used to describe you. I get tired just looking at your cooks
I feel as old as Tim. -
Good advice all, thanks.
I think I might begin by lighting in multiple places for a quick heat up.
Themometor has been boiled and tested. -
did not have time to read all the replies so disregard this if needed , BUT, did you remove the fire box and remove all the ash and lump that fell thru the little holes .. that seems to be the most common problem with not reaching high temps .

Before I got a Barbque guru, I bought a cheap fan from Wal-Mart to help get the fire going and the temperature up fast. This one was on an adjubtable rod that would swing around and put the fan right in front of the fire box.

Just wondering where you're located...I drive right through the new Pearl Brewery renovation 5 times a week. Gonna be nice. I used to drink nothing but Pearl Light...Long time ago,
Mike -
I haven't read other replies -- sorry if I'm redundant.
I now use a weed burner...
Lordy! Lordy! You want fast...?
