Shrimp & Grits
We followed the recipe w/ a few modifications. I'm sure the chicken broth is good but almost 18 cups, we used water w/ the exception of one can I used w/the meat mixture. No Tasso here in town but substitued bacon grease that was used in the gravy. Added some green peppers & shallots w/the meat mixture. We also used yellow grits since the local restaurant use's them.
Tried a new beer tonight. I usually base new one's on how the package looks and this one was cool and interesting. Not a bad ale. Also a little Publix bread w/garlic spread. A very nice meal and don't ask about the calories

Caught this varmit lurking on the deck trying to get some bread

Damn Jason another excellent looking cook. What is in that smaller cast iron pan on the left of the stove top, & is that the bread you referred to on the side of the finished plate? Just looks great. I see you have capped off the gas geiser on the deck next to the egg :laugh:happy in the hut

Thanks Zippy. The gravy is in the cast iron pan on the stove and that's the Publix Bread "Tuscan Boule Loaf". I cut the gas off about 7 yrs ago since it was for a grill and gas logs. They pissed me off over some billing and safety issues (my bill went from like $7 a month to $30 in one month but I only grilled then twice a month so I cut it off).

thats funny, I have had several similar 'situations' over the years, lets just say that I have been invited not to return as a customer to Dell, Aqua Water, ABN Amro Mortgage Company, Fung's Chinese Take-out, and various others :laugh:happy in the hut

Now that looks good! My wife is a big Shrimp & Grits fan, so I'm gonna convince her it will be even better on the egg! [pat]

They were good and cheaper at home. Grits were an acquired taste for me in the last 5-6 years. Didn't eat grits back in TN.
-
That looks very nice! It's always interesting to me to see the regional spin on the same dish. I've had "lowland" shrimp & grits in your part of the world (SC) and loved the gravy, but also am a big fan of the New Orleans approach - whatever "gravy" is a result of the roux + veggies that the shrimp are cooked in - almost a NO BBQ Shrimp recipe served on grits. I've never made a run at it myself, but with your post, I believe I will.
BTW - how the heck did you get out of TN without eating grits? -
The corn was used for other things

Got these at the Kitchen Emporium downtown they have white & yellow gris. Have never been to the Mill but plan to someday. The KE also sells the local goat cheese products I've bought if you like that stuff, I didn't think I would till I tried them. Sullivan's uses the grits. -
Congrats welcome to the cult!

She sold it then to the people that are running it now. Nice things there but some are a little high but unique.
-
I've used that recipe and have also had the Shrimp & Grits at Magnolia's. It's a little slice of heaven. If you ever visit the restaurant, get the cookbook. We've made several dishes from it, and they've all been wonderful.
-
do they still have cooking classes down there?

That looks unbelievably good. Shrimp and grits are one of my favorite southern dishes. Will have to give your recipe a try.
-
Thanks Anne. We will probably add some cream to the gravy as well next time. But it's good as it looks!
-
