Personal Opinion: Stoker vs DigiQ II

I'm about as ready to buy either of the mentioned products. I have read several reviews of each (including The Naked Whiz's comparison) and eventhough I myself am inclined for the Stoker, it kind of makes me think about it because I see from all of your posts that most of you use the DigiQ II... Is there something I'm missing.

Could you tell me your personal opinion on why you chose the DigiQ II over the Stoker?

thanks in advance for you comments

cheers,

Never tried the stoker but mainly because I'm technicaly challenged :( but the DigiQ is very easy to setup and use. I put in the top 3 of aftermarket things I've purchased.

unless i was cooking 4 butts consistantly at a time i wouldnt buy either, the egg runs pretty well on its own. so maybe get the cheaper one. that one check during the night doesnt seem to warrant the cost to me, and i would still check on it during the night with one

  • I have the BBQ Guru (pre-DigiQ II) and love it. To answer Fishlessman's comment, how much is a good night's sleep worth? And how much assurance is knowing you won't wake-up and find the temp in the BGE at 100 degrees worth? To me the answers are "Yes it's worth it".

I agree... It's a fact that I'm buying one (actually it's the wife's birthday present) I just have to choose which one...

  • Pato,

I have a DigiQ II. I like the fact that I can go to sleep and wake up in the morning and know that my food is still cooking and safe!

Is there a specific reason why you chose it over the Stoker?

I have used both and can say that I like the Digi Q II much better. It is easier to use, smaller, very accurate and comes in multiple colors (for those who have to coordinate everything). In all honesty, we use two Digi Q II's for our contest cooking and trust them very much for the overnight. They really do make for getting some sleep much easier and are very easy to use and set up.

I've also been considering the DQII. A quote from one site has the unit (for med-lg), 10cfm fan and adaptor door for $260. Is that in the ballpark where you're shopping? Thanks for your your input! 8 - )

Interesting you should mention using two cookers with each own DigiQ II, the Stoker can control multiple cookers... you still prefer to use TWO DigQIIs? instead of one stoker? is it that much easier to use to spend the extra money for the sencond DigiQ II?
  • How many eggs do you have, how many more do you plan on buying?

I have two digiQII's and really like them.

    1. Waterproof
    2. Excellent customer service
    3. Small

Stoker - do you need to track via your computer? One unit multiple smokers. Poor customer service from what I have recently read in other forums but can't attest to. I will say I have emailed them and no response. BBQ Guru people answer the phone and make sure you are happy.

I also thought the stoker the one time I used one with multiple cooks had a confusing menu and the display is much harder to read.

if i'm nervous, i'll check at 4am. since i got to bed at maybe 11 or 12, and get up at 7 or 8, i figure the thing can never be "in the danger zone" for four hours unless it magically went out the second i hit the sack.

only had two fires go out. one was in the small, and had to do with alcohol. the other was a center burn, which i've still seen happenanyway (from posts here) to folks with powered draft units.

Yes, I'm prepared to spend 250-300usd so both are in the price range and it is of no issue, but I do want to get the best for my money (well... wife's money.... same thing anyways hehehe)...

I have one XL and plan on gettin a Large soon enough and maybe a small... I guess if I had the possibility to track progress of the cookers at home, while I'm at the office I would do it, so the online monitoring capability is definetely a plus for me...
  • Yes, at he time Stoker only had a 4CFN fan motor.

  • Didn't you just answer your own question?
  • Digi Q has the best customer service. I call them about a percieved problem with calibration, they said send it in, my problem is I had a big cook in 2days and needed the DigiQ, they said no problem. they got it back to me before the cook, checked and calibrated no charge. Incidently the problem with my Digi was operator error.

hehe  well this is why I'm asking for YOUR opinions... I've never used it and maybe someone has and will go and say "the interphase doesn't work well" or "it's not worth it" or something like that...

I mean if I could I probably WOULD monitor online, but then again, it might not even need monitoring so in the end I might not even end up using it...

I am well aware of each's capabilities and techincal details from several comparisons I have read... but I was asking for personal preferences from you more experienced users as to complement the information I already have and then make a better educated choice. :P

    cheers
  • Not a particularly great reason, but the DigiQ guys have their shop near where I grew up. Anyway, I bought one and love it. Never had a problem.

but its still good to know how to low and slow through the night just in case that guru dies at midnight. there is a reason we learn to ride a tricycle, then a bike, then a motorcycle. ;) i would still get up, at certain times of year its nice to sit out late at night with the smell of bbq in ther air and i would be worrying that the guru either died or the power went out enough to get up and go check

I do prefer the two to one Stoker. As mentioned, the ease of use for the Digi Q IIs along with the amazing customer support make them the clear winner for me. They do what they advertise they are supposed and are a great addition to your cooker!

It would help to know what is making you vacillate between the two.

You will see a big bias on the forum towards the DigiQII (q2).

I have and use both the q2 and the Stoker and decided to get the 10 cmf on both.

The q2 has slider on the fan to reduce air flow. Once the egg is lit and at temperature I close down the air flow to prevent temperature from overshooting. I very seldom use the ramp mode,a but it is there if I need it. (Stoker also has a ramp mode via computer software).

I had a problem with the q2 which was fixed very quickly. Customer service for me has been great.

I would need to re-read the q2 manual but my thinking is that it is water resistant not water proof.

Frankly, I wouldn't leave the q2 out in bad weather without a cover or inside a zip lock bag. Too expensive to take a chance.

When I use the q2 I always use the Maverick ET-73 so I can watch the temperature inside the house or around the yard. The temperatures between the ET-73 & q2 often differ so I just add or subtract the difference from the ET-73. The ET-73 also has audible alarms that I can hear when in the house a few rooms from q2.

The controls on the q2 are very simple but changing some features does require some button navigation.

The stoker controls take some button navigation also. However, the Stoker will allow assigning of the fan to any of the monitor probes.

The stoker can monitor & record the probe(s) & fan(s) when connected to a computer. This is a neat feature but not always used.

One can monitor the stoker from any device that can receive a network signal or wifi if the port is opened to the web. I haven't checked lately but I believe the stoker software will also send email with readings - I am not sure if this update was completed or not.

The display and command structure of the Stoker is more involved but like most things, once you use it, the functions are pretty simple.

I like the small size of the q2. Temperature probes are rated to withstand higher temperatures than the standard probes of the Stoker. If using the Stoker or q2 the temperatures in the egg shouldn't be all that high anyway.

I don't use either powered vent system as much as I did when I first got the eggs. The eggs will hold the temperature very well without help.

I do use a powered vent system when doing cooks longer than 4 to 5 hours, always for overnight cooks and or for expensive cuts of meats like dry aged standing rib roast.

If I don't want to be concerned about watching the temperatures I use a powered vent system.

Thanks to all for all your comments. You have been most helpful.

I am about ready to place the order for a DigiQ II, and just have to configure the package. It's for an XL BGE so it will be as follows:

    Customizations:
Fans: Pit Viper 10 CFM Blower w/ 6 ft. ext.
Doors: Big Green Egg XL Adaptor Door
Upgrades: DigiQ 10 ft Meat Probe Upgrade
Upgrades: DigiQ 10 ft Pit Probe Upgrade

What do you guys think? is this correct? Do I need something else? Something less? Are the probe upgrades worth the extra buck (are they needed)?

    thanks again for your input.

    cheers

You don't need the 10 foot probes or any type of extension, unless you plan on putting all the stuff on a table away from the eggs.

    digiq_in_action.jpg

But you do need to decide what color :)
  • Fishlessman and GG:

Could it be you guys are getting older and HAVE to get up anyway to pee, so why not check the BGE while you're up? :silly: :woohoo:

hehehehe well I definetly don't HAVE to get up, not even for a pee, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a late night/morning cup of tea, or coffe, or beer :woohoo: hehehe

you dont have to be old, you just have to drink enough. the lake is pretty peaceful in the nighttime and its pretty nice out there at certian times, especially with the crisper air in the fall, just makes the smell of bbq extreme.

I have an XL and bought the DigiII w/10cfm fan. After lighting my fire(I use a chimney starter, 1 shot glass of 91% alcohol) I plug in my Guru and set on 250 and let the cooker come up to temp that way.

I normally drink tequila while lighting the fire heheh :woohoo: but now that you suggest it, might give 91% alcohol a try hehehe :P
