OT: Has anyone gone through Diverticulosis?

Most of you don't know but LC was taken to the ER on Thursday and admitted Friday to the hospital. She has been diagnosed with Diverticulosis which is an inflamation of the colon. She is doing ok but we have been delayed going to St Lucia and she is really torn up about that. I have never heard of this illness before and do not know what to expect. When I get back from visiting her today I will go online and learn. My question is, if any eggers have gone through this, would you mind sharing what you went through and the outcome. If you want to keep it private please use my direct email at timreyes@hotmail.com. Thanks for sharing. I will be back in a few hours and will get caught back up.

Oh it is not fun. I got a bout of it when I thought Id go heart smart and added a bunch of fiber to my diet, in the way of nuts and seeds. Turns our as we get older, well forties, we can develop little pockets or pouches in our colon, usually the lower portion. That's called diverticulutis. If something gets stuck in that little pocket, like a small piece of a peanut, or even a cucumber seed it can get infected, that diverticulousis, and it's one of the most painful things a person can go through, well that or an IRS audit.
Best way I can describe it is take a brick put it between your spine and kidney then expand the brick. The pressure is so painful. Thank God for morphine! After I got out of the emergency room and it calmed down I ate cream of wheat for a week till it calmed down. If you want to know more just email me. -
((((((HUGS)))))) to both of you.
My brother had a similar attack (his first ever) a few months ago, completely out of the blue. Very scary when it's happening, as he told me. His treatment was a round of antibiotics and something for the pain, initially a very low fiber diet, and lots of fluids.
He's back to eating almost normally, higher fiber than he used to, and his doc continues to remind him to drink water and has scheduled a colonoscopy to check everything out.Egging in Crossville, TN -
Yes my hubby was just diagnosed with diverticulitis last week and has an appointment for consultation with a surgeon on Feb 2nd. From what I’ve learned on the net it says to avoid nuts, seeds and corn if you want to avoid an emergency.
This can be treated with antispasmodic meds, antibiotics (if needed) and a change to a high fiber diet. It’s best to look it up on the net to get more info.

no nuts??? Tim your gonna have to move out

Please let her know that we are thinking about her and that she is in our prayers. I see a lot of fiber in yalls future!
-
OUCH! Hope she is home soon and the drugs are kicking in and she is feeling better. Keep us updated and tell her we are thinking of her. Hmmm Cupcakes have fiber! I think you need to make her some. and sprinkles are important too!

Watch out for the antibiotics, some of them are worse than the illness. The first antib's that they gave me made me deathly ill. Had to switch to a less potent antib'. I was a week and a half recovering.
Here's to a quick recovery.

Give LC my best. I was hospitalized for five days thirteen years ago for it. That was no fun at all! Next to the food poisoning 32 years ago I wouldn't wish either on anyone! As long as she's in good medical care she'll come through it - but will feel kinda puny for a while!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Had 3 attacks in 2 months 11 years ago.2 hosp stays pumping antibiotics in me. Finally they removed about 12 in of colon. Hurts like hell.

That is actually backwards. Having the "pockets" in your colon is diverticulosis. If they get infected it is diverticulitis. see attached http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.humanillnesses.com/original/images/hdc_0001_0001_0_img0088.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.humanillnesses.com/original/Conj-Dys/Diverticulitis-Diverticulosis.html&usg=__GqsdPKZkkRMUlQoCkatr72j2xKQ=&h=265&w=336&sz=31&hl=en&start=21&um=1&tbnid=UiBeCV3ER6EXTM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=119&prev=/images?q=diverticulosis&um=1&hl=en&sa=N

Sorry to hear about the illness. Diverticulitis is usually managed easily with antibiotics once the diagnosis is made. The most common antibiotic combination is Flagyl (metronidazole)AND Cipro (ciprofloxacin) or Levaquin (levofloxacin) or Bactrim (trimethoprin/sulfamethoxazole)for 7-10 days. Under rare circumstances surgery can be required but that almost never happens. After healing it will be best to avoid seeds and nuts. They are not digested well and can block the diverticulum thus causing the diverticulitis.

you're right. I was under the effects of morphine. I'm lucky I remembered where I hid my pork ribs.

Thanks Grumps,
Hell of a handle for a Doc. lol.. :woohoo: The timimg of all of this could not have been worse. We had paid for a 4 day stay in St Lucia including a full day charter for tuna. Friday I made the decision to change our flight from Friday to Sunday. All and all we flushed over 3k down the tubes. Oh well, chit happens. We are now scheduled to fly out Monday. This part of the trip is being apid for by my corp and they have been very understanding and helpful. Thanks again for all your info and the link.

Thank you for the url Grumps. My hubby was just diagnosed with diverticulitis and we need all the info we can get on this condition hopefully to avoid any emergencies.

my diverticulitis flairs in the fall when my asthma flairs: the drugs to control asthma fight the colon's usual activity...
talk about a double whammy!
find corn on the cob pretty hard to digest but nuts ok everyone's case is a little different, but the inflammatory process takes a while to resolve--even after the meds! ps don't travel without your meds 'cause that is surely when you will have a flair-up!
pss Don't forget that we all must get colonoscopies every 5 years once we turn the big 50especially more if colon cancer runs in your family. also, bbq with (regular) charoal has been linked to stomach cancer--don't know about natural lump--
