Not the kind you’re thinking. When I saw Warren’s (Unconundrum) post last week about teaching his son how to cook on the egg, & the pizza he made with the lettuce on top, it reminded me of my college days in Indiana Pennsylvania; pizza shops there made ‘Wedgies’, basically a cross between a hoagie (or cheesesteak) & a pizza. I have never seen these anywhere outside that little town & have not had one in over 20 years.
I can’t remember exactly how they made them cuz I was plastered every time I ate one. I think they baked a pizza with cheese only then cut it in half & put the hoagie stuff on one half, then put the other half cheese down on top, cut that in half again & you ate it like a sandwich. Anyway, I wanted everything hot except the salad, so I made two pizzas, one ham with sweet peppers & the other salami with hot peppers (no sauce on either). After cooking, I cut them & then threw the salad on top of one & put the other on top, cut it into pieces & served. If you are at all inclined, please try this, it is really tasty.
* I had to do this inside because I needed to do both pies at once, they needed to be 16 inchers, & its cold out there today (if I think of any more excuses I’ll edit this post):
Start with some D cups:

Pizza one:

Pizza two:

The salad: romaine lettuce, tomatoes, onions, & Good Seasons italian dressing (doesn’t that stuff remind you of the 70's):

The assembly:

The final Wedgie:

A big batch of Shmestikals on the side, this time with Blues Hogg Honey Mustard:

* I’d like to know if Wedgies are sold anywhere else, has anyone ever had one?

OK, it looks good and I have never heard of anything like it, but I have a question.
Wouldn't this perhaps be easier to eat if you did calzone or stromboli and after you bake them you slice them open along the side and stuffed your salad in at that point? It would be more like a stuffed pita pizza salad. -
There was a place near the beach in Tampa that made something similar. Back then, I wouldn't eat anything with italian dressing, so I never did try one. But they do look good though. The premise of making a cheese pizza(I'm guessing they are sauceless)for the bread does sound good. That looks like the begining of what could be an awesome pastrami sandwich.

Looks great. I've never heard of THAT kind of wedgie. Did they serve it with a MOON pie and a Swirlie slushie?Knoxville, TN
Nibble Me This -
That looks much less painfull than an "atomic wedgie"
It really does look tasty :woohoo: -
probably would be, I was having some problems eating this, I made them too big, instead of cutting into quarters I should have cut the pie into 6 sections.. I also think I did something wrong, it didn't taste like I remember, close & very good, but not the same, could have been that I wasn't falling down drunkhappy in the hut

yes, definitely sauceless, & the more I think about it I think they put whole pieces of lunch meat on after the pizzas were cooked, maybe thats why nothing used to fall out, but pastrami would be good in there to, I do remember the cheesesteak one being excellenthappy in the hut

I guess if you were a freshman there was a chance it could've been served with one of them toilet swirlies :laugh:happy in the hut

Sparky, the "atomic wedgie" would be performed by replacing the plain hot peppers on the salami half with sliced ABT's, damn it man you've moved the ball another few yards :Phappy in the hut

Allright, that sounds great, but I want half the royalties from the "atomic wedgie"
:woohoo: I can't wait to try it,once I get my chit together

Ya nailed it Zip. Maybe the veal sangwieeches weren't as good as I remember either. College memories are vague.

I like the way you cook. :cheer: Most of the stuff you come up with is spectactular. How'd you make the shmesticals?
-
I think I would do smaller Za's. like a 8-10 inch or so. make and bake like you did but cut into two pieces. top with salad stuff and fold. might not be so messy to eat?? I will have try these. hmmmmm that winning pizza from last night..... or a white pizza with chicken and ceazer dressing?????
-
There was a place called "Hungry Howies" that did something similar to that too. Their pizza crust was a lot more pliable than regular.MMMMmmm.
-
You can fix that falling down drunk thing...but I'm guessing the "munchies" may have been involved back then.
-
you know I am not familiar with that term

I think you would be right, the more & more I think about it they used to deliver these things in pretty small boxes, it probably was an 8 inch pie folded in half, it was definitely cut, but the whole 1/2 pie shape was about the size of the 1/4 pie-sized ones I did today - & yes, the sky is the limit with these things, anything you can cram into a stromboli, pizza or hoagie would work great, kind of like an oven grinder sandwich with fresh pizza crust instead of a roll...happy in the hut

Hey Zippy,
You got my curiosity up, so I googled your wedgie, and this is what chowhound.com had: Acording to Adrian's Pizza at 330 Pearl St, Pgh, a wedgie (wedgy?) is a "pizza dough baked with cheese and your choice of meats, then topped with lettuce, tomato and onion, folded in half." Would probably make it easier to keep the salad intact.
