Welcome to the club. For starter, search on 'thermapen', 'Maverick ET-73'.canuckland

Easiest thing to do is contact me after you've done research on thermapens.

Excellent question for everyone. There are going to be a lot of opinions so I will toss in mine.
There are two thermometers one should get. One for for convenience the other will make your food and cooks taste much better.
The Maverick ET-73 is a remote wireless thermometer. 1 probe for food and the other for pit (cooking) temperatures. This can be bought online for $39.99 plus s/h.
The most important thermometer in is the thermometer you are going to use for checking the done temperature of your food. The Thermompen Company makes a lot of thermometers but there are two you should think about. The most popular is the Thermopen, instant and fast read thermometer. Thermoworks also makes a thermometer that is as accurate as the Thermopen and has changable probes.
You will find the Thermopen expensive. It took me a long time to decide to spend that much money. I ended up spending more money on other thermometers trying not to spend the amount for the Thermopen - seems a lot of folks have done this also.
Thermoworks at times has refurbished Thermopens for a grate price. Many folks have purchased the referbished units and they work just like new ones.
If you shy away from refurbished then they can be found at discount by contacting Mollyshark here on the forum also check out The Naked Whiz store. TNW price was a good value also. I would think there other online sites you can find discounts by doing some online searching.
If you only get one thermometer get the Thermopen and only get the fast read model.
If you get a Thermopen model ONLY get this model. Mollyshark & TNW provide the correct model.

Just another thought.
If you are in Canada and buying from a US seller you may be subject to duty, taxes as well as the potential loss or damage in shipping.
Also, being in Canada, I wouldn't suggest a refurbished unit.
You might want to check the Canadian dealers or other Canadian suppliers of the products.

canada rib boy, where are you in canada? i'm in toronto, ontario where, with taxes, it costs around C$135.
i took a chance and bought(imported) from mollyshark, no damage, no duties, no taxes. saved about C$35 compared to buying local, YMMV though.canuckland -
You will love the Thermopen.
My comments were revised as you are in Canada. I am in the lower 48.

Not as good as the Thermapen. Remember you get what you pay for.

Looking forward to put my thermapen to good use.
I was addressing canada rib boy (edited my post to make it clear). Knew you're from down south.canuckland -
I live by North bay on a Lake called "Ruth Lake" I work in Washington DC and commute each week back home to Canada.
I will buy the thermapen et-73, that is what most of people are suggesting. I will have it delivered here in DC and carry it up with me.
Do they have any eggfest in Ontario. I know they had a dealer at the Spring cottage show with lots of attention and interest -
It seems like the one with
interchangeable probes is nice as with one Thermapen and 2 probes it is like have 2 thermometers in one. Expensive though.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html
