Just wondering if anyone knows of a good source for purchasing smoking woods.

Also wondering why some woods are available with the bark on or off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have an Academy Sports near you, I find they have a good selection. Here in Nashville they sell chips, small and large bags of chunks. Chips are around $2 per bag vs. 4 at Kroger and even more at BBQ type stores.

I'm looking for more specialty type woods. Sugar maple chunks, apple chunks, alder chunks. Even my BGE dealer only has chips and not a very good variety. Just the basics, hickory, mesquite, sometimes cherry. Will need an online source.

I recommend this site a lot, so I want to be sure everyone knows I have absolutely no relationship with them at all, other than being a satisfied customer.

Look at their double fillet cut - available in many different woods. And note that shipping is included in their pricing.

I'm in Milwaukee. No Publix here. The grocery stores here carry the basics. Even hardwood choices here are limited. For some reason everywhere here carries "Cowboy". Walmart has RO but not in the winter. They told me it's a "seasonal" item. Only in Milwaukee:(

I am lucky in that my BGE dealer is only 1.5 miles from my house. They have it all there. I am sure I am paying more than other places, but I like the excuse of going in there and buying from them. They have been excellent with customer service. I've had some gasket issues and they have twice come to my house and replaced the gasket for me. Can't beat that kind of service.

I don't find price to be a big issue with smoking woods. I have nine different types (some were gifts) and have not run out of any yet after six months of cooking 2-3 times per week. A bag lasts a long time. Lump is a different matter. That adds up. I may have to start price shopping and buy it somewhere else at least some of the time.

Thanks Rod! I just briefly went through their site and it's really nice. Tons of information. I really appreciate the link.

Wow, I am amazed your BGE dealer isn't better stocked. As I posted below, my dealer has it all and lucky for me is close by.

As far as online goes, it won't be anything sponsored by BGE as they don't want to upset their dealers. Or, if they do sell it online it will have to be at the same price that the dealer gets. However, as mentioned by another, I am sure there are other online sources.

In Milwaukee you should be able to find hickory, apple and cherry at Menards (save big money). Or if you want to visit the Gurnee IL outlets there is a big Menards right across the street.

Consider yourself very lucky to have a dealer like you have. We're fairly new to the egging world but we know more than the dealer about eggs. Our dealer had no idea what the different sizes BGE makes. Actually argued with us that their isn't a medium. It looks like BGE isn't selective about who their dealers are. A few months back we wanted to purchase a small egg and were told that they don't carry them and if we wanted one we'd have to wait a few months. Apparently dealers need to have a certain quantity to place an order with BGE. Ended up going to a fest in Chicago to get one.

Our Menards only carries chunks of hickory and mesquite. Apple, maple and cherry in chips only. Thanks.

Smokinlicious is good, I've also used Hawgeye's and been satisfied with their chunks...

    Morning Anne:

Here is where I have bought my wood chunks for the past few years. In fact I got 15# of cherry and 5# of maple just last week.

From the first time I entered their store, I knew I was lucky. However, the more I read stories like yours the more I realize how different it could be.

I'll give them a plug - ChimChimneys on Main Street in League City. If any Eggheads in the Houston area are having issues with your dealer take the short drive down to League City.

  • I would think you can get any of those chips at your BGE Dealer. They may need to order them, but it should only take a few days. It might cost a bit more. I have used Cherry, Sugar Maple, & Apple and have been happy w/ all 3.
As far as dealers; I live in Maryland and the 2 dealers in Mt Airy, Md have been outstanding. I think like anything; there are good and not so good people out there and some happen to be BGE Dealers. There are enough of them, so if you happen to go to one that is not so great, just move on to another dealer.
  • Along with Menards try Sportsman’s Warehouse, the show a store in De Pere and New Berlin.
This place is local to me but sells on the net http://charcoalstore.com/ if you can’t find anything else.

  • Grill Daddy: It tain't that simple. Nearest dealer that carries any inventory at all is 35miles. It is a pain.

To answer this specific question for Eggheads, I've just launched a web site. It's pretty basic at this point, but it gets the job done. I'm processing and packing hickory, persimmon, cherry and white oak in what I consider the perfect size split for the Egg. http://www.SmokeInTheOzarks.com

Look for our ad on Naked Whiz's site.
