If you ask specific questions here you will get specific answers. We don't mind redundant questions either. There is a learning curve that anyone can master. I suggest trying something simple and ask how, when where, etc., but don't give up. The reward is worth the effort.

I would not give up on the egg. I have had mine for about the same amount of time and in fact bought a second one in June as I found them to be very efficient.
As Bente stated above use the Forum for a source to answer your questions. One piece of advice I was given when I first purchased it was to learn to control the heat doing a slow cook like a butt or ribs. After two or three of these you will have a good feel for where the bottom vent and top vents need to be for temp control. -
Don't be afraid to ask anything. Everyone wants to succeed and are very patient. You won't regret it. The results are worth it.

I guess I was fortunate. I was looking for a better smoker and a stranger said there was a thing called an egg and it was green.
I did some looking and first found the forum here. I read all the posts I could for 2 days then found a local dealer and got the large.
In reality I have never had a bad cook - until I ruined my ... ruined the nutt cook I was trying Christmas Day. Burned the heck out of it.
Controlling the egg is one of the easiest things to accomplish and it is all down hill from there - easier from there.
The folks on the fourm will help you as much as you need it.
If you don't mind using lump then let us get you off on the right foot.
You have to have had some great cooks in all that time, hopefully.

Where are you located? I'm sure someone could walk you through if needed. I've burned/overcooked more food through the years on gassers than I have on my egg. Give it another try, and we'll help!

big'un is right on..you can watch someone at a fest or visit or have phone help.. there is a reason eggers can bake pastry on the egg.. you can control the temperature

ok. then how do you tame the fire after you light it. here's what i did. put a good size amount of kingsford briquetes in, then i think i added to much lighter fluid, but let it sit hoping the excess would evaporate. when i lit the briquetes, flames went every where. would matchlight work better?

Sounds like the model that comes with a fire extingusher may solve your problem. I could sell and deliver one for a small nominal fee. send certified funds.

I didn't think poorly of him/her until the lighter fluid/matchlight post. That was pretty much over the top, I think.

If you're serious, I would say the person who sold you the egg did you a great disservice. Neither lighter fluid nor briquettes are used in a BGE. If you let us know what city you live in, we could probably find someone willing to show you the in's and out's. It's pretty clear you were sold something you have never experienced. As great as an egg is, you still need to understand it, and it's strengths. Using briquettes is NOT one of them.

i tried to give you some help, but you never replied.
youn need to understand that we get trolls here from time to time posting exactly what you did (briquettes, lighter fluid, etc.) so it's understandable we might think it's a fake post.
frankly, it is very hard to understand how you would have seen or heard about an egg, bought one at a dealer, read the directions, and still started off that way. it is like someone saying they are selling their porsche because it runs horribly, despite pouring fresh oil in the gas tank and driving in first gear all the time.
so... having already made the offer, i'll try again. if you are serious about trying to learn the correct way to use it, feel free to ask anything. if you want to sell it, despite offers and suggestions for help, then feel free to do that too.

If you told us where you live one of us would be glad to come over and help with the set up. Sorry you are having trouble with yours, we all like ours, and want to help just not sure where to proceed.
Have you tried sneaking up on your temps? What type of lump are you using? How are you lighting? MAPP Torch? Starter cubes? Oil and Napkin?
After reading the responses you got and the few more questions you asked I suggest reading this web site, it should answer most if not all of your ceramic cooking questions.
