Oatmeal on the Egg?

While eating my morning oatmeal today (nuked for convenience), I got to wondering if anyone has made any on the egg. I made mine w/ rolled oats today (only a bowl full), but my favorite is McCann's steel cut oats. A bit time consuming for one bowl, so I only make it by the pot full. I have made it ahead of time in a Crock Pot and then refrigerated it (sometimes using apple cider instead of water). Spoon out a slab, moisten, nuke, and it's still pretty good. Any ideas? Dutch oven I'm thinking. After the oats, maybe cook some other breakfast stuff: no sense in wasting an Egg full of hot lump.
Edit: Amazing! As I was typing this and previewing for typos, Spring Chicken was submitting his post on oatmeal! Must be some sort of Vulcan Mind Meld thing going on. Either that, or lot of oatmeal fans out there!

My dear wife has been making steel cut oats (Red River) by first toasting it in the pan with some butter and then adding the water and letting it simmer. Very nice.

You could easily do the same thing with a dutch oven on the Egg - inverted plate setter, trivet, about 350°F. Melt the butter in the pan and get it hot, toast the oatmeal for a minute or so, then add the liquid and cover.

I like it with a big shot of maple syrup.

THANK YOU Egret!!! I knew it could be all that tough if I had never even laid eyes on it!! :P
and to stay on topic  there is a great company here in Maine that does organic (not to big of a deal to me) steel cut that is sooooo goooooddd!!! I can't remember their names as I dump the bag in my big jar. quite often I will put a cup of it in the frig at night in about 2 cups of milk then cook it in the morning.
  • Steel-cut oats cook a lot quicker in a pressure cooker. I put the oats and cooking liquid (and sometimes raisins) in a metal bowl, cover the bowl tightly in foil, and put that bowl inside the pressure cooker with 2 cups of water. Let it cook 5 minutes at full pressure and then let it cool down on its own for another 8-10 minutes or so. Comes out great and total cooking time is about 20 minutes.

Same basic technique works for brown rice or any grains that would otherwise take a long time to cook.

Thanks, Dave. I'm going to give it a try on the Egg. (Don't have a pressure cooker and I don't think sealing a Dutch oven w/ duct tape would be suitable substitute. ) About how long on the egg, and do I need to constantly stir while cooking? Do I need a Spurtle?

That spurtle makes you wonder about eating any food that need to be beaten down with a stick ;)

Just a minute or so to toast and then about an hour of simmering. If you use a trivet under the dutch oven I don't think you'd have to stir all the time. On the stove my wife only stirs it every 10 minutes or so.

Let us know how it turns out.

    Girley Man chili!?

    You blasphemous old coot!

Daring to call any chili Girly-Man!

I would NEVER call your chili Grape Boy chili implying there was something inherently wrong with the ground turkey, salt and pepper and the carefully doled out 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes you use. I would NEVER do something like that. ;)

Doncha' love the blasphemous old coot thing? I thought it was a nice touch. ;)

Oh Carey.....you slay me!! I thought your "Socially Unacceptable" handle was describing your 'lame' chili!! :woohoo: You got the "Old Coot" right......but, I'm just wonderin' here if you're trying to set me up for a real man chili showdown!? But, then, that would take a 'real' man...however, you could get Gayle to help you.....cause, you'd need it, in bunches!! You're obviously desperate or you wouldn't be posting my 'secret ingredients' like this. :cheer: :cheer: Ground turkey and red pepper flakes!?? Geeezzzzzz.....
