Oatmeal Kind of Morning

Wind and rain and cold, and threatening to sleet and snow here in Spring Texas USA. That means hot oatmeal for breakfast. Not just any oatmeal... the steel cut Irish kind. You know, the kind that warms your innards now and kicks in your afterburner afterward for a day or two.

Might have to plan my day around doing nothing.

By the way, this is NOT normal for the Chicken Ranch, so the girls will definitely not be working today.

I can't believe you're getting that kind of weather. Especially in your part of Texas. I have a sister-in-law in Ft. Worth. Haven't talked to her but I'm sure she's getting some of the same. We live in WI but glad I'm not there right now. It's really getting hit with a lot of snow. Not looking forward to going back. We're in the Keys right now, 80 degrees for the high today. :)
Enjoy your oatmeal! I'm a big fan of McCann's steel cut. Have it almost everyday. Good for the heart.

We have the wind and cold today, doubt if we will get any snow. It rained 3.5 inches yesterday then the cold front pushed that out and left cold wind in it's wake. Went to bed @ 23:00hrs last night it was in the upper 50's. Woke up this morning shivering and it was in the mid 30's.

Damn, Spring Chicken, great minds DO think alike! I was typing my post (above) before seeing yours. Not that cold here (Rain!), but I do love oatmeal year round.

Good morning Leroy. Steel cut oats, a little honey and a sliced banana, maybe a few raisins, make for a great breakfast.

How do you fix your oats? Stovetop, nuclear, Crotch Pot, Egg? I'm thinkin' bout making me a Dutch oven full of oats on the Egg and need a plan.

Hope the nasty weather is short lived at the coop. Wife is also out sick now but the AC is running in Fl. Something strange about having a cold when the weather is in the 80's

I start mine the night before and they turn out great. This is the method I use. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Slowly stir in 1 cup of the steel cut oats (preferably McCann's, in the steel can). Remove from heat and let sit overnight. In the morning cook slowly and bring to a low simmer. Cook for about 10 min.'s stirring frequently or until desired doneness. You'll have enough leftover for the next few mornings. Just zap in the microwave.

Hope you and your wife feel better real soon. This weather in FL is incredible. I got up at 6:00 this morning to walk and it was 76 degrees and humid. Going out snorkeling in a bit. I'm going to hate to leave. :(
  • Yep! We get some 'weather' every once in a while. That's what we called it around where I grew up in Louisiana. My Grandpa would look to the sky and say, "Got some weather headed this way." Believe it or not I knew what he was talking about.

Nowadays they make it sound so technical.

  • I've been in Tennessee when it rained or snowed. It can get plum nasty.

Tennessee ain't very tall so the rain should run off into Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia pretty quickly. I think they need it.

Yep Got up really late. Since I stay up late. Good old Quaker Oats are on the stovetop.

As soon as I hit submit will be in a bowl with Brown Sugar and Milk.
  • Good timing on your post. Nothing like a hot bowl of oatmeal on a cold wet morning.

I grew up cooking my own oatmeal from age 6 on. Back then all we knew about was the 'rolled' oats. Made 'em cook quicker but they're not as good as steel cut.

I think I'll try some of that 'toasted' oat meal Dave Katz posted up above. Never thought of doing it that way.

I have my oatmeal 5 days a week at work, 9am, like clock work, infact it is cooling off now. MMMM!
I nuke 2 of the instant packs in a 16oz styro cup, perfect fit.
  • I usually don't decide on what to have for breakfast until I'm ready to eat. Since steel cut oats take at least half an hour I sometimes just settle for something else. My loss.

When I cook 'em I just bring a pan of water to boil and add a pinch of salt and the oats. Somewhere toward the end I add some sugar and milk and let that cook well into the oats. I was gonna add it anyway.

Works out good and is piping hot when finished.

  • You need to make her some hot oatmeal. It's sort of the meatless/brothless Chicken Soup alternative for when you're feeling poorly.

    Enjoy your 80° weather.

  • I'm making some of your cornbread tomorrow to go with some soup or maybe some chili. Your cornbread is good stuff. Only I'm adding some jalapenos from my garden. After all, this is Texas...

    Enjoy your Quaker's

  • I can eat a mess of that Peaches 'n Cream stuff. Better than ice cream. Never thought about having it at work. But then I no longer have that problem..

I guess I am weird, big surprise there!, but I cook mine till thick, then spread on a plate dot lightly with real butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. that is how my Nana always made it for me as a young girl and I love it that way now.
But I also love porridge. which she did by bringing a pot of water to a boil and sprinkling with corn meal and whisking, cook till thick, then into a bowl and just a little brown sugar and milk. she cooked on a wood stove till cancer stole her from us on 1999. she would have loved the eggs!
  • You would probably like grits. Not the store kind but real grits with plenty of butter on 'em.
