Question About Meat Grinding And Sausage Stuffing
Rascal
Posts: 3,923
I've got a 350 watt KitchenAid stand mixer and after reading of how many here grind their own meats and make their own sausages, I'm wondering if any of you use this type of machine for one or both of these tasks. As usual, TIA!

I have the Pro 600. I don't think the 350 watt one has enough power to effectively grind meat.
-

I use one just like that for grinding. Not sure of the wattage, but it's at least 20 years old so I'm thinking it's a lower wattage model. It will grind 10 pounds of meat in 10 minutes.
I don't like their stuffing attachment. The plunger types are much handier.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
Darn it!~ I guess I'll just have to use the wood chipper! 8 - )

Rascal, I use mine for meat grinding and de-seeding/skinning tomatoes, I don't have the sausage attachment but if it works as good as these two attachments I am sure it's great:

I just checked, mine is 300W. So you should have no problems. You want to use a pretty low setting, like a 4 which makes it feed easy, cut cleaner and will not build up heat. Make sure to chill your cubes or strips before grinding.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

That's neat! Thank you!!

325W, 600W when will it stop? I'm waiting for Wess to post a picture of that commercial job he has. It causes the lights to dim in the neighborhood when he fires it up. It has a grinding rate of something like 300 pounds an hour.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

Just took a closer look, it is the Artisan 300 Watt, about 14 years old & still kick'n

Mine is 325 watt and works fine, I wouldn't recommend stuffing with it though. -RP

Don't remember exactly, but Hayhonker was here with me and I think we ground 70# of beef in less than 12 minutes...We actually used it just this morning and ground 48# of beef.....Toys is fun !!!!! -
That's the one. So it looks like the grind rate is closer to 350 lb/hour.....Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

& that is a nice toy ya got there Wesshappy in the hut

With the proper attachment, this SOB can crank out some burgers too, I just use it to squeeze a lot of tomatoes

Y'all just amaze me with all this talent!

Cabelas rates this 1 HP grinder at 720# per hour..it IS a workhorse...

hate to tell you this, but your 300 watt version doesn't grind meat well. see CW's post

you should have checked with him before doing it. :ermm:

I'm at a higher elevation than he is, so my electricity is stronger.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

I said *I* didn't think 350w was enough. I did not say it would not work. Course in your feeble one track brain that is me backing up again.
I have been told by a number of people who know more than I about sausage making that the higher power grinds faster and prevents the fat from starting to cook.
Yes you can over come that by partly freezing it, but that too puts more stress on the motor.
I am glad that it works; however, I personally think 300-350 w is enough power. I prefer the higher power.

keep trying.... you'll get one right one of these days

no it ISN'T. electircity is stored in tanks, and the higher your elevation, the less pressure there is.

that thing is recommended by tony soprano! yikes. 70 pounds of meat in 12 minutes.

hey AZRP. what do you recommend stuffing it with? we are going to get a grinder attachment this year (we use christmas as an excuse to buy ourselves stuff so that mom and dad get stuff from santa too). but if you say (and someone else did as well) that the stuffer isn't that great, should we just get on of the plunger type?ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Kind of ditto - I have the KSM90, circa 1986 so the predecessor of the Artisan and it's 300W. As long as the meat chunks are very cold/partly frozen I can grind ok. I do have the sausage stuffer and it worked great although I had to ask DH to help because it was a bit fast to manage on my own.
I did get the Cabela's/Waring 450 grinder for Christmas last year after he helped me process 14 lbs of pork butt into fresh kielbasa. A dedicated grinder is a nice upgrade if you find yourself grinding often, since it's lets you process a lot more a lot faster.
