From Wikipedia's page on "Stew"The distinctions between stew, soup, and casserole are subtle and not always easy to judge. The ingredients of a stew may be cut into larger pieces than a those of a soup and retain more of their individual flavours; a stew may have thicker liquid than a soup, and more liquid than a casserole; a stew is more likely to be eaten as a main course than as a starter, unlike soup; and a stew can be cooked on either the stove top (or range) or in the oven, while casseroles are almost always cooked in the oven, and soups are almost always cooked on the stovetop. There are exceptions; for example, an oyster stew is thin bodied, more like a soup.
The chowder page said chowder was a soup. I like the distinction made here that stews are usually the main course, where soups are usually a starter. -
Traditionally a Chowder is any thick soup made with Seafood and chunks of Veggies. However, some notable exceptions are corn chowder and Manhattan Clam Chowder.

The base definitely fits the soup category. The large piece of fish made it my main meal.LBGE Katy (Houston) TX

i would classify it as a chowder/bisque. lots of chowders or bisques, clam, fish, seafood, shrimp and corn, crab and butternut, lobster, catfish. i had a great shrimp and corn chowder this week and i see there are lots of recipes with cajun spices on the web for that dish. now how would you classify my version of fishlessman stew
