Propane Tanks and Meth

To make meth, the brewers need to store anhydrous ammonia under pressure. They use propane tanks. The problem is the anhydrous ammonia corrodes the tank, making them unsafe. They bring them back and swap them for a new tank. If you see a tank with a blue substance on the fitting, don't buy that tank.

While this is NOT a hoax the warning is meant for the folks that swap out the tanks and not the end users.

Tanks are NOT filled by stores like Walmart. They are filled by the Propane Companies. Any tank found to be used in this manner will be pulled from distribution and destroyed.

Stores like Walmart keep the empty tanks and full one in separate storage lockers.

Not saying you won't find a dishonest employee, but if the tank has the Propane companies seal across the valve, it has been tested.

Ok I'm a chemist and have brewed alot of beer but outside of a street drug what is meth?

The issue is that they fill the tanks with anhydrous ammonia and the ammonia is corrosive to the brass valve assemblies, but not the steel tanks themselves.

The pictures I have seen in snoops etc. are pretty cleary blue in color.

I agree that the folks that fill the tanks are most likely to detect this, but it never hurts to be cautious.
