Does it matter? You going to cut them in shorter lengths anyway!!!!
If you get the 1x6 cut it in 8" lengths. If you get the 8" cut in 6" lengths..
Get the cheaper one.

get shingles.... they're cheaper. and no, they aren't treated unless they say they are treated.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Must have had to much good wine and beer yesterday and today my mind must be partially blank. Thanks a lot for making me feel stupid. You might not want me to be a helping hand at the Pig in the park next year.

I would think that the thicker piece of wood would be better rather than throwing away a skinny thing after every cook.

well... you are going to toast one side and coat the other side with salmon fat. but you do what you wanna.
i bought a paper shopping bag full of 'undercourse shingles' for maybe 3 bucks. that's about 40 cooks for under five bucks. cheap enough where i throw out a skinny dirty charcoaled thing rather than try to wash it and reuse it. the cedar plank is sacrificial and not meant n=to be reused, FWIW.
but that's just me

I get the hint.I will have to check out the box stores and check it out. That's what I call being frugal.

they bind them in a bale. even if you buy red cedar select shingles (not the cheap undercourse kind) it should still be cost effectiveed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Thanks dude.On my trip to your neck of the woods this past summer there seemed to be a lot of that material being used on the houses.

After finally using up all those I won as door prizes over the years I had to purchase some. Instead of paying $6 for 3 thin planks in a package I just went to Lowe's and bought a 3/4" X 6" X 6' cedar fence picket and ran it through my plainer before cutting into 12" lengths. $2.50 ÷ 6 = 41¢ each. Being thick they do well with salmon.
However, I noticed in the BBQ section that they have some cedar sheets. I suppose you can use those to "re-plank" your used plank each time but the sheets are as expensive as the real thing.
I like the cedar shingles idea. Some shingles are very wide and other more narrow. Being thin they would soak up water faster and you could double them up for thickness. I might consider that if I run out of fence pickets.

no need to double up. i cut off the thin end (they are 18 inches), and after a soak in the sink while i prep, they do fine. use them once and toss.
i'm not sure the cedar sheets would do anything to "re-plank" your used plank unless you put them on the fire side of the reused plank. there's no benefit in flavor from the fish sitting on the cedar, it's only from the cedar smoke. in truth, you don't even need a plank, you could cook indirect and simply toss a few cedar chips in.
i like the planks because (in addition to the light smoke) i happen to have them on hand, they don't require cleanup, and they make for an interesting presentation.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante
