I know this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find it on TNW site or here but what is the rule of thumb for cooking time per weight of a turkey?
Thanks for the help.

I would start carefully monitoring the temperature at 10 minutes per pound -- depending on fire conditions and several other factors, it will range from 10 to 20 minutes per pound.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to gauge when I should start the 17lb turkey for a 6:00 dinner. My guess is that the turkey should be on by noon.
Thanks

I agree, oven turkeys have always gone at least 15 minutes per pound or more, but for some reason in the egg at the same set temp mine have always cooked in 10 or less minutes per pound, watch that birdie carefully

no no no no, it'll be a cinder in 6 hours, I wouldn't put it on before 3pm, & even then it may finish early, then tent it under heavy foilhappy in the hut

Thanks. I guess we can always push dinner off for an hour if needed.
Thanks

The good news is that the turkey can rest for an hour without hurting a thing. I think your noon start is a safe bet. See my post below re: full Mad Max prep and fire starting took 2-1/2 hours. That was about an hour more than I expected, but, I was a little bleary eyed at 5:30.

Oops, I got my turkeys confused. The bird I am cooking today is 13 pounds.

325 over Alder wood chips, unstuffed, so a touch under 10 minutes per pound, you have a great day toohappy in the hut

my first BGE turkey, this has got to be the best forum I've ever seen. Everyone has been very helpful. I'm looking fwd to many years and discussions. I tried a 6 pound roaster last week, 225 for 2.5 hrs. I'll have to see where I can find more flavored chips.

I put a 17 lb bird on following the Mad Max instructions at 7:00 am, and it was 160 in the breasts and 182 in the legs at 10:00, so it cooked at about 10-11 minutes per pound. I tinted it after one hour, cause it was already starting to brown. I'm still pretty new to all this, and I'm learning to trust my thermapen, and when it says it's done I get whatever I'm cooking off. Good luck.
