Smoking with Used Coffee Grinds
Cookn&Climbn
Posts: 94
Seems like this is a little used technique, but it does provide a different smoke flavor; other than that of apple or hickory, etc.
Freshly made

Drying the grinds and chicken in a marinade

Nice blue smoke

Finished product with white rice. Also used DP Red Eye, coffee based BBQ dry rub.

Since these photos were taken I have done further experimentation with more chicken breasts, producing consistent smoked flavor results; both indirect and raised grid direct. Actually went to St@rbucks and got a few hours (about 3#) worth of used grinds for free. They seem to smoke more than my personal grinds.
Thanks to RichardFl for the idea.

Can you describe the taste?
-
Heck with the taste I wanna know why you eat out of styrofoam boxes?? :woohoo:
They'd work well in my cart... -
LOL OK I now have a vision of Pete, with his cart out by the dumpster behind Starbucks trying to explain that all he wants is the coffee grounds....... and the foam cups and plates for his "good" dishes.... LOL

a more mellow version of JD, just barely has the flavor of coffee. did the first few cooks with chicken so i could (hopefully) easily pick up the flavor tones. describing any smoke flavor is difficult to do without using vague words:

Sooo glad I can bring humor to your day hooker!!!
:woohoo: -
It's OK Pete, I am very easily amused
hey if it helps my sister is a Starbucks manager would you like coffee grounds in Ocala instead of the other?? -
You are welcome. Since we last discussed the idea, I have placed 3-4 TBS in an aluminum pouch and poked a few holes in it Makes for a longer smoking time.
Rusty Rooster kindly brought me some Coffee Wood Chips this summer, They came from Costa Rica and the are great on ribs.
The web site--www.coffeewood.com is not on line and the phone number in Nevada is not in service. Guess will have to go to Costa Rica. -
no no and not only that HELL NO!!! :woohoo:

I am going to have to try this. I have been putting my grinds in the flower beds around the house. The plants seem to like it and I haven't seen slugs since. I saw somewhere that caffeine was a deterrent for slugs and figured it was worth a try.

OK this post has me curious enough to try some coffee grounds for smoke. They are not something that I would have thought of on my own.
