Newbie - What size Egg?
Five Dollar Eggsacta
Posts: 3
Hi All -
This has probably been asked a few times. I'm looking to buy an Egg for my parents for Christmas. They'll typically use it for certain items, but not everyday cooking. I don't see them cooking for any more than 8-10 people at any time, and mostly things like turkey, brisket, and ribs. I've seen the numbers on the sites, but was wondering if someone could recommend a size based on practical experience.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Most of the time it will be too big for them, but if they're cooking for 8-10 at times and doing occasional turkeys, I'd get the Large.

Go with a large. Plenty space and not too big. XL looks as if it uses way to much lump.
-
I vote for the large as well considering they will cook for that many at times.
Good luck.

I have the Medium. Cook for me and wife %80 of the time and us and another couple the other 20%. Lusting after a small to compliment the medium which I think will be perfect. That said if I only had one Egg again the large would also be my bet as is probably the most versital.

JLOCKHART,
Do you think that you're medium would be fine if consistently cooking for 6 people? My thinking is that, if you're cooking for 8-10, you typically cook a few things.
I appreciate everyone's responses. My parents have been talking about these things like a kid talks about a nintendo. It's just not something that they'll buy for themselves.
I'm sure you'll find them here looking for cooking tips shortly. -
You're a generous offspring, Eggsacta!
One advantage of the Large is that it has the broadest selection of accessories. When you or they are shopping for add-on items down the line, you can easily go to a local dealer or any of the online accessory vendors and get pizza stones, stacking systems, woks, cast iron grates, etc. etc.
These items can be harder to find for Eggs in different sizes, although a lot of the Eggers here have been creative in developing their own alternatives.
Although I'm not often cooking for more than half-dozen people, one reason I chose a Large is that I wanted to be able to cook a 14" pizza. That size pizza stone fits perfectly in a Large, while still allowing adequate circulation around the edges without frying the gasket. If you choose a smaller Egg, you might get bumped down to a 10" pizza which is too small for the pizza-holics I feed. A full-sized turkey is also easier to fit.
Bottom line: Rare is the cook who complains that his stove is too big. -
No. The Medium is the best for a couple a far as I am concerned and does fine for four but for more than that it can get complicated. With six people I would get a large. Yhe sitution you get into is cooking several things. With one Egg you have to match the temps for the cook that day or somethings going to get cold. With two eggs you can cook ribs at 250 and bake bread at 400 and have it all come off at one time. If limited to one Egg the large with that many folks will let you do ribs, baked beans and ABTS all at the same time as cn be done at the same temps. I do it with the Medium but it requires some work and effort. Do a search using the forum search function and type in "some'en". Will bring up a list of some of the cooks I have done on my Medium.
