I have a nice, not very nice $$ wise thank goodness, wooden salt shaker. But anyways I was looking at it when I filled it yesterday and there are all kinds of tiny bore holes?? Of course I had just filled it with salt so it all went into the trash. but what would be trying to get into salt or out of it?

sounds to me like the wood had a post beetle larva or two when the wood was chosen. It's uncommon, but can happen.

I saw this on an episode of Star Trek. These creatures disguise themselves as humans then suck all of the salt out of your body. Not a pretty sight. Anything resembling a human around your house? Be careful, that's all I'm saying.

here's how I know...a couple years ago when I would uncover my eggs I would see this tiny pile of saw dust.

After a couple times it dawned on me something was chewing my handle so I removed it to find these little tell-tale holes and paths.

I merely placed the handle in the microwave (while my wife was gone of course!) and nuked the buggers wherever they were then hiding in the wood! I'm with you though your salt shaker had to go!

Regarding the question about what to do with the scotch bonnets the other day--After the sauce is made dump the salt and add to pepper grinder. SERIOUSLY if you have a weevil/larva problem. Empty the salt remove the hardward and place in a micro wave and ZAP!

Sauce, Chili, Habanero, Aka "Agent Orange"

INGREDIENTS:
12 Habanero or Scotch Bonnet peppers, stems removed,, peppers chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbs vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup distilled vinegar
1/4 cup lime juice

Procedure:
1 Sauté the onion and garlic in oil until soft; add the carrots with a small amount of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until carrots are soft. Place the mixture and raw chilies into a blender and puree until smooth. Don't cook the peppers, since cooking reduces flavor of the Habaneros. Combine the puree with vinegar and lime juice, then simmer for 5 minutes and seal in sterilized bottles. Heat index : 9 on a scale of 1-10.

Servings: 1
Yield: 2 Cups

if you tap on it does dust come out?? powder post beetles? richards microwave technique should work but i would toss and get a new one... bugs belong in the garden and if they are not the helpful kind they get killed . just my 2¢

OH my god! I don't know whether to laugh or cry! LOL you guys are just nuts! But I do/did have these holes. very tiny pin pricks you could hardly see them unless I took off my glasses and looked very close. very weird. LOL and i love star trek hubby doesn't get it? I always wanted a tribble :huh: thought they were cute. the dog is close I guess
