I'm thinking of mixing up a batch of Mike Mill's "Magic Dust" rub for a pork roast tonight. Will that work well on pork?

I modified it and it is great on pork.

Rub, Magic Dust, "Indian River Pixie Dust", Richard Fl

Mike Mills is the only three-time Grand World Champion at the Memphis in May Barbecue Competition and owner or partner in barbecue restaurants in Illinois, New York and Las Vegas. In his James Beard Award-nominated book, Peace, Love & Barbecue (Rodale, 2005), Mills describes Magic Dust as the most popular condiment at all of his restaurants, and the most frequently stolen. He advises that it can also be used on popcorn, baked potatoes or pretty much “anything but ice cream.”

    INGREDIENTS:
    1/2 cup paprika, (Smoked Optional)
1/4 cup kosher salt, finely ground, (1/8 Cup)
    1/4 cup sugar
    2 Tbs mustard powder, (Coleman's)
    1/4 cup chili powder
    1/4 cup ground cumin
2 Tbs ground black pepper, ("Indian River Chipotle Rainbow Pepper")
1/4 cup granulated garlic, (Garlic Powder)
2 Tbs cayenne, (1 TBS Cayenne, 1 TBS chipotle, ground)

    Procedure:
1 Mix all ingredients and store in a tightly covered container. Keeps indefinitely.

    Yield: 2 1/2 Cups

    Recipe Type
    Rub/Seasoning/Spice

Thanks Richard. I had misplaced your modified version so I made the batch from the original recipe. A mere wet finger tip taste tells me it will have a twang and a bit of heat. I might go easy on one end of the roast this time as Pat isn't too keen on hot.

BTW it seems like it would work well on chicken too - have you tried it?

Try leaving out the cayenne and cutting the chili powder in 1/2.

I like to make tortilla chips in hot grease and then sprinkle pixie dust on them as they drain on a paper towel.

Just finished some whole Maine lobsters w/butter and lemon and corn on the cob. Go Pixie Dust.

    Richard,
our pork roast is still on (late night - long story) but it's looking great. BTW you keep calling it Pixie Dust vs. Magic Dust...

When I made the original with the modifications, I called it "MAGIC DUST",

My friend liked the flavor so much she said that since magic dust was trade marked, I should change the name in case I ever wanted to go commercial. Hence the name PIXIE DUST".

I am beyond the age of getting involved in another commercial venture.
