Here are a couple of pictures of how mine are setup in my Outdoor Kitchen...
They are basically "freestanding" on a low shelf.

thats a real nice setup....someday. i went a few years with this setup, paver on a plastic milk crate (im not sure i recommend this setup but it worked)

I was not sure I understood your question. Lots of good responses about free standing, but note that they all used the feet. I do think that you want to have an air space between the egg and the base.

Here is a pic of mine. They sit about 18 inches off the ground.

We built BGE into granite countertop, no problems with heat.
