My fire went out :(

Well I am a type A personality so I checked my egg every 20 minutes from 5 pm to 3 am. I was finally confident that my temperature was going to @ 240ish and left a note for my wife. She always gets up around 6 so I figured 3 hours would be fine. "If the Egg is under 200 or the meat is under 165 wake me". She slept in until 8 this morning and when she checked the egg was 100ish and the meat was down to 139 DOH! I had set up my lump according the the Elder plan, but must not have had enough dust or something. My fire had burnt from the center and worked its way to about 2oclock and 5oclock. 2 hours later I have my egg burning again at 240 and my meat is climbing again up to almost 150. I knew I should have just stayed up all night and watched it until I had the hang of it. I guess I am going to have to save up for a digiQII. Do I need to worry about the time spent in the 40-140 range? I had it up to 165 when I went to bed and and it made it all the way down to 134 before the temp started going back up.

Murphy's Law will always prevail if you lower your gaurd. When I check on my long cooks every 2 hours throughout the night never a problem but if I don't check there always seems to be a problem. I follow Mr. Ward's advice to the letter and light the lump at 9, 12, and 3 oclock positions. The lump will burn towards the front and down towards the air supply. Get yourself a wiggle rod to collapse the lump from the bottom air vent up through the fire grate. The rod is nothing more then a L shape with about 3 inches so you can stick it up through the grate and move the lump collapsing any voids. Sorry about your experience but with some practice it becomes less of a problem.
