Ok ~ So here is the scenario...
put 7.76 lb butt on at 9:45 p.m. ~ 250 dome
11 p.m. ~ 270 dome
4 a.m. 210 dome ~ brought up to 240 ~ used wiggle rod to aeriate
then i wake up 8 a.m. and dome at 160 internal of 140. when i opened the lid...my fire was basically done...mostly ash, so I pulled the butt off put it in the metal box in the kitchen at 240 ... and need your advice...I have a medium egg and can the fire box just not handle the long cooks? I used the BGE lump coal...packed it in like I have read about...I am at a loss....
Anyway - Should I just finish off the time in the metal box or rebuild a fire? If it stays in the kitchen, should I cover it? Please help.

i think i'd just finish it in the oven if i was you...its gotten all the smoke it needs. ..what i'd do though is put it on a V rack it in a roasting pan with some apple juice in the pan then seal it good with HDAF so that it stays really moist. . .. and have the oven in the 250 range ... i think you'll be fine. ..
as far as the egg goes, i don't have a medium, but i thought you should be able to do a big butt in the medium just fine. ..hopefully one of the medium owners will weigh in on that issue. .. . -
I guess that would be HDTF for us "seasoned" Eggers :laugh:Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

is that what they call it out there in the wild west where the men are men and the sheep are scared??

My midium has no problem at about 250° for 22 hours. Something else is wrong. BTW, did you read that you can fill the egg with lump all the way up to say an inch below the top of the fire ring (not the fire box). If that's all true, I'd start checking thermometers.
The setting on my Medium will obtain 250° whenever my bottom vent is open just less than 1/4 inch, and Miss Daisy with her pedals open bout half way. Good luck. -
LOL. . .

I've done a number of picnics, briskets, and butts in my medium with no problems running out of fuel. Fill it to the top of the fire ring (or at least to the middle of it) and it will easily go 20+ hours at 250 with decent lump in it.

I did not realize about filling an inch below top of ring...that must have been my problem.
Thanks for the help! -
Thank you for the advice...

Sounds like we have extremely similar evenings/mornings. I have a large though. The only thing I can think is that I didn't have enough tiny pieces and dust for the fire to spread evenly so my fire worked its way to the side and then went out. I have mine back on the egg now at 240, seems to be doing fine.
