Gasket adhesive recommendations

Well, my #2 LBGE which has only been cooked on less than a handful of times has experienced gasket failure like I haven't seen on my other eggs. I was able to pull the gasket away from the main shell on the bottom and the dome on the top with little effort. The gaskets were the original gray felt gaskets, not the white nomex gaskets, and it looked like there was tape or plastic of sorts underneath the felt. Also, they're not melted. The only cooks I've done on there were low-and-slow ribs and some chicken parts. No TRex-hotter-than-the sun cooks...:)


Don't know if I really want to salvage those gray ones, because if I'm going to have to reapply a gasket, it may as well be the right one--the nomex gasket.

Question for those who have already done the replacement is this:

Which gasket adhesive would you recommend for the replacement nomex I'm looking at getting? In the nearly 11 months I've been cooking on the eggs, neither my #1 LBGE or SBGE had a gasket failure like this one did.

    Did you go with nomex when you replaced your gasket? If not, what did you go with?

    I appreciate the link you sent earlier, and have been doing my homework and reading up on this. Probably will call Atlanta in a few minutes to talk with them and see what they have to say. I'll also ask if it's OK for me to post the results on the forum or not. Either way, I just want an operational cooker :)

  • First post, so bear with me. I've been lurking since I got my XL-BGE last month. Have had two gasket failures, the first failure was on the first cook. Chicken smoked at 350 for 2 hours. Called the dealer, he came out and personally replaced it. Prior to delivery, he had removed the original gasket and replaced with a felt using 3M. When he came out to fix the first failure, he cleaned the egg and replaced the melted parts of the gasket, again using 3M. I did several low temp cooks, after waiting 72 hours, as per his recommendations. I did a steak cook and burned the new gasket. I have a theory that the 3M adhesive, coupled with the "tape" on the back of the felt gasket, when heated, gets slippery and causes the gasket to slide when opening the lid.

    SO, what I did after the second failure was to remove the gasket. Then I took a dremel with a sanding stone to the gasket area. Dremel'd down to the ceramic. Cleaned with alchol, and replaced with a new felt gasket. Put the lid on, went to Disney World for 5 days, came home and cooked steaks. Did a 550 degree cook last night with ZERO problems with my gasket. Did fix it? Dunno, will wait and see. Plan on cooking the whole weekend on it, so I'll know more on Monday.

    Just my thoughts.

    Thanks for the note...Disney World? You must have won the Super Bowl :) (Isn't that what they asking the winning team members? Most of them usually respond w/Disney World...)

    I've had really good luck with the felt gaskets on my first LBGE, and on the SBGE. This one really gave me trouble early, and I didn't even cook at high temps on it, either.

    When there is talk about 'gasket failure' there are really two issues. The felt failure and/or the adhesive failure.

    Sounds like you experienced adhesive failure. The Nomex has a higher temperature rating than the felt.

    You comment about the adhesive being 'tape or plastic' was interesting. When I have experienced the gasket adhesive failing it seemed to me the adhesive was just a membrane without any type of carrier.

    Late last year I had gotten a Nomex gasket replacement for my large which I haven't yet installed. I was told to use 3M 77 over the adhesive.

    Several people have reported installing the nomex and the adhesive failing. They have 'pulled' off the adhesive then used 3M 77. From what I have seen (or not seen) in the posts their gaskets are holding fine.

    In an attempt advert a adhesive failure with the Nomex, I tried to remove the adhesive from my Nomex, but that hasn't worked. I tired freezing the gasket to get the adhesive to release. At ambient temperatures or at freezing temperatures I can't even get an edge of the adhesive to lift from the Nomex. The only thing I haven't done was heat the Nomex to get the adhesive off.

    It was interesting and a little surprising to me that Ross reported his rutland adhesive didn't hold.

    Please let us know what you find out and how your replacement goes.

  • Sorry to hear your experience with the gasket material.

    This might just be semantics, however, it seems to me the adhesive turns more liquid (melts) rather than being slippery.

    When I was talking with HQ about removing an old gasket I was specifically told using power tools, sanding wheels, sand flap wheels, grinders and such should not be used as it will void the warranty.

    I was also told not to use 'goo gone' type chemicals.

    Just a 'for what it is worth' moment.

  • bean i saw the same thing on a large at pa egg fest... i was cleaning out a large so it would cool down and the gasket just came off with that plastic still attached looked to me like it ws the protective backing for the adhesive that had never been removed no residue left on the egg and no stickyness to the plastic.. felt looked good as new. i did not get a chance to really look as had sweat and smoke and heat in my eyes.. i am curious if you still have it does the palstic peel off to expose the adhesive??? if so then it is probably time to let the mothership know...

    Has anyone experienced 3M Super 77 vs 3M Super 90? I just experienced a gasket failure this past friday 6-15-18. I purchased my XL BGE used and with it came the replacement nomex gasket (white). It didn't have any adhesive on either side so I scrubbed off the the lid and bottom where the gasket was to be placed. Let it dry completely. I applied the nomex seal after spraying with the 3M Super 90 but as said earlier in this thread the adhesive did seem to melt right off. This was about the 5th time I cooked on the egg and was in the process of a reverse sear. I was heating up the egg and reached my 600 degree mark when I raised the lid and off came the gasket. 

    Should I go out and buy the 3m Super 77 to use instead of the 90? Should I apply the 3m adhesive to the egg itself or spray on the nomex, let it tack up and then adhere the gasket to the egg? 

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
