Hurricane Ike Update
Spring Chicken
Posts: 10,255
Hurricane Ike is really starting to make people nervous, including Spring Hen and me. For a while it appeared to be leaning heavy on Corpus Christi as the favored target but has now started drifting more toward Houston.

Even if Ike remains on the current path we're going to get a significant amount of wind and rain. Up to 75 MPH winds by one account, but I'm thinking/hoping a bit less. Even so, add that to the projected 4" to 12" of 'possible' rain and we're going to be getting some of what folks in Florida recently got. It's not a good thing.
People are already lining up at the gas stations in my area, and I suspect Home Depot and Lowe's is doing a brisk business in plywood sales and generators.
We started taking in the "flying objects" tonight and I will continue doing so most of tomorrow. Saturday is predicted at 100% chance of "heavy rain." So I won't be sparking the Egg on Saturday for sure.
Folks along the coast are going to get a whopping. I really feel for them. Probably lots of wind and rain for Lawn Ranger in San Antonio and all those Eggheads up Dallas way too. Then on to Oklahoma but with less punch.
I don't think I've been as nervous about any hurricane as much as this one. I know Rodney Dangerbird wouldn't shut up crowing about it today. I might join him in crowing tomorrow.
Keep your fingers crossed for the next few days.

Y'all keep safe over there and batten down the hatches...we'll be thinking of you

We are wishing you the best buddy. You shouldn't give up on egging though. I've passed the time in a few hurricanes by sitting on the screen porch, cooking and watching the squalls come through. One thing I've learned over the past several years, is to have a low level of confidence in predictions, even with 12 hours left before it hits. It can easily be much better or much worse than you think. Scott

You know I have everything you need. Been without juice way to many times in ice storms.
Be safe.

Hey Spring Chicken:
I'm slightly less than 2 hours east of you if you need to evacuate. We stayed here during Rita and housed and fed 30-some-odd people for days and slightly less than that for two weeks, all without any brawls or hair-pulling.
We have lots of windows, so it was disconcerting to watch the pine trees sway in winds blowing at 106 mph for over an hour, but except for losing on the order of 1500 trees, thousands of feet of fence, having to shop vac the water that was blowing in under the doors for a long time, and watching my sisters pace back and forth all night, it wasn't as bad as you might expect. We didn't lose any animals and had no major damage to any of the buildings here. The big plus is that we have an emergency generator which switched on as soon as the electricity failed.
The downside is that the same sisters will be back if they evacuate Jasper County (I love my sisters but they're both terrified of bad weather and even make me nervous after a while) and, as before, all the evacuees will bring their neurotic animals with them (dogs, birds, cats, and I'm hoping they ditched the ferret).
So, feel free to head to the looney bin to ride it out should you need to.

Wish I knew which way to jump...4 hours ago we were supposed to get hit by up to 75 mph winds, but now it looks like we're out of harms way. Batton the Coop down, My Good Friend.
