beer can chicken - fetal pig smell?
Iowa State Egger
Posts: 337
Hi - I am not the Iowa State Egger, I am his wife. But he refused to post this question, so i logged on as him and am taking the reigns! So - my question is: Does anyone know how to get rid of the "smell" when cooking a beer can chicken? I tend to think that it smells like a fetal pig dated back to my high school biology classes. Granted, I am preganant, so i know i have a heightened sense of smell, but my husband even smelled it the first time. I am a HUGE fan of the BGE and chicken and i can't even eat the beer can chicken due to the smell. Anyone experience the same thing or know how to get rid of the smell?
Thanks -

I have never noticed that smell, but I have never been pregnant either :ohmy:happy in the hut
West Chester Pennsylvania -
Maybe he needs better beer  Sorry never had that problem like Zippy said but why not try them without the can.

I never had that problem but I'm curious what kind of beer did you use?
-
Bud Light (actually both times) - what kind of beer do you use?
-
Never Bug Light usually Sam Adams. I can't image Bud Light would be a problem. Maybe let the fire burn a little longer before starting
-
you mean formalydehyde?
try losing the can
-
Perhaps it could be whatever they use to decorate the can. Why not try a different brew, container, or both...

boiling beer has an unusual smell to begin with and you are pregnant... there are any number of ceramic or stainless vertical roasters out there and some with reservoirs for liquid... i suggest trying them and ditching the beer can for now.. i never used a real beer can as the thought of cooking the 'paint' and the coating on the inside did not seem like a good idea.
and congratulations

I also loose the can, the general consensus seems that beer can chicken is merely a novelity around this forum. Can't go wrong with the spatchcock.

Have him properly dispose of a can of beer and replace with apple juice. They also make ceramic stands and you can add all kinds of goodies to flavor the bird.
Is he doing anything funky with the skin?

Try one of these if you like the idea of beer butt chicken (without the beer can): Tipsy Chicken. I have one and they are heavy duty. Been spatchcocking my birds lately, simply because they cook quicker and the skin is crispier. Beer butt chickens are moister IMHO, though.

My first thought was "Is the chicken spoiled?" I have bought spoiled chicken and it smells like that. I have not experienced this smell while cooking, I would try replacing the beer with juice or lemon/lime soda pop. I used to be an Iowan, now living in Packer country for past 35 years. We use Dizzy Dust on our chicken. Make awesome chicken..... congrats on your pregnancy.
